With all the horrible news here on Earth these days, it's tempting to let one's mind wander off to life in outer space. And that's exactly where players will be going later this year (at least virtually) if indie developer Dabster Entertainment is able to secure enough crowdfunding for its upcoming sci-fi adventure, SSTR.

Being a researcher may not be the sexiest kind of detective work, but that's often how the real breaks in a case are discovered. You can find out just how true that is for yourself when indie developer Colestia launches its "conspiracy investigation" A Hand With Many Fingers on PC this spring.

Most adventure games ask you to be sly like a fox, but in Infuse Studio's Spirit of the North you'll have to be a real fox in order to awaken a legendary animal spirit inspired by Nordic folklore.

All adventure games require using one's head to overcome obstacles, but that notion takes on a whole new literal meaning in Helheim Hassle, indie developer Perfectly Paranormal's colourful side-scrolling "body desecrating puzzle-platformer" coming soon to PC and consoles.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is an insidious mental illness that punishes its victims – and those around them – long after the original ordeal has ended. Indie developer Little Guy Games' The Last Sky tackles one man's harrowing attempt to deal with this disease, and has recently been released on Steam Early Access.

There's no shortage of the proverbial white hats and black hats in gaming, but straddling the line squarely between them this summer will be indie developer Limited Games' hacker mystery GREYHAT – A Digital Detective Adventure.

Step aside, Max. There'll soon be a new rabbit investigator in town, and his name is Kurt. He may not have the same name recognition factor just yet, but later this year the noir-styled anthropomorphic detective will appear in his own upcoming adventure, Falcon City.

Adventure games come in all shapes and sizes, and some adventure games are made up of all shapes and sizes.  A promising example of the latter is Graceful Decay's Maquette, a first-person "recursive puzzle game" coming soon to PC.

It's been a decade since Frictional Games first caused us to stock up on clean underwear for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and seven since The Chinese Room took up the mantle in A Machine for Pigs. But just when you thought it was safe to come out again at night, now Frictional is back with the announcement of Amnesia: Rebirth due out later this year.

Forests can be wonderful places to hike on beautiful sunny days with good company. They're a whole lot scarier alone and in the dark, especially when the woods are filled with monsters. Guess which type is the setting for indie developer Deqaf Studio's recently released Creepy Tale?

Nostalgia for the 1980s is in vogue these days, in no small part thanks to the popularity of Stranger Things, and soon indie developer Gabarts Digital will be taking us back in time to a similar small American town in his upcoming point-and-click adventure, Thrillgate.

The thought of going back to school may not be a very enticing prospect in real life, but it's much more appealing when there are puzzles galore waiting if you do, as there will be in indie Croatian developer Pine Studio's upcoming The Academy.

An anachronism is something that belongs to another time than the one in which it finds itself, which certainly explains the name of the eponymous star of indie developer Maybe Later Games' Ann Achronist: Many Happy Returns, a retro RPG-styled time-looping adventure available now on PC.

Is there any other intelligent life out there? And how would we find out if there were? Now you can join the search to discover whether we're alone in the universe in Haguy Eis's newly released sci-fi adventure, First Contact.

The Whitechapel murders may be history's most infamous unsolved crimes, but Jack the Ripper ain't got nuthin' on the Artisan, the serial-killing automaton in indie Canadian developer EXP-resso Mutt's steampunk horror debut Camera Anima, currently seeking funding through Kickstarter.
