An unsolved missing persons case is always a mystery many years after the fact, but it's especially so when the very house the person disappeared in can't (easily) be found either. This is the double challenge that will face gamers next year with the upcoming release of indie developer PSINE Studios' The House in the Hollow.

The ghosts of Christmases past, present and future aren't the old supernatural forces at work at this time of year, though not all are nearly as benevolent, as in indie developer Norbert Gerard Matyńka's newly released side-scrolling mystery, The Land of Crows.

Adventure gamers love spending their time traipsing exotic locales looking for hidden items. So do practitioners of geocaching, a real-world adventure that lies at the heart of MDNA's next Carol Reed mystery, Geospots.

What is going on in Italy? First it's Venice under water, and now the Tuscan city of Carrara is being overrun by zombies – the latter only in game form, fortunately, in indie developer Elvis Morelli's episodic horror series Game Over Carrara, which is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter.

Did you get a Doll for Christmas? I'm not talking about a kid's toy, but rather the recently released horror adventure by that name from indie French developer Braisque.

When your handle is "Adventure Boy," you're bound to get caught up in plenty of hijinx. That is certainly true this week, as no sooner does the eponymous teenage star appear in one game than we begin looking ahead to the next.

The worst thing you can hear from a distant space station is absolutely nothing. When a faraway outpost goes radio silent, it can only mean that something has gone very wrong, and that someone will have to go investigate. That person is you in indie developer VD Games' upcoming first-person sci-fi adventure IKO 39.

We're quick to write off demonic beliefs as psychological delusions, but at least in games, sometimes the evil is real. If you're still skeptical, just wait for indie Italian developer Profenix Studio's upcoming horror adventure HELLSEED.

No one writes letters anymore; it's all about video. So perhaps it's no surprise that Kadokawa Games' newly-revealed sequel to Root Letter will be Root Film.

Twin Peaks has always displayed a rather tenuous grip on reality, and now, nearly 30 years after its television debut, the popular David Lynch/Mark Frost franchise is ready to present gamers an equally tenuous grip on virtual reality with the release of Twin Peaks VR.

"Snow in Norway" may not sound that newsworthy, but it is when SNOW is the name of Jonathan Nielssen’s upcoming open-world mystery adventure and a future version of his native Norway is where the tale takes place.

Cults are not to be messed with, but then neither are spurned cultists when properly motivated, as we're about to find out in the newly-released debut installment of indie Italian developer Neon Sloth Studio's two-part The Cult: Marduk's Longest Night.

Argentine studio Blyts certainly isn't afraid to show its dark side. After debuting with the comedic time-travel adventure Kelvin and the Infamous Machine, the indie developer went a shade darker earlier this year with Nobodies, in which players provide clean-up for government-funded assassins. Their next act will be darker still in the upcoming point-and-click thriller Slender Threads.

The city of Arles may be best known to those outside of France as the place where Van Gogh chopped off his own ear, but it's also home to a famous bullfighting tournament, and it's the latter around which indie developer Tom Simpson's newly-released Feria d'Arles is based.
