For many people, college or university years are some of the most memorable of their lives. A stepping stone between school and full adulthood, it's a time to make fast friends and begin grow into oneself. And then, just as we're getting settled and comfortable, graduation looms and we're forced to let it all go, thrust into the wider world and asked to make decisions that will shape the rest of our lives. It can be a difficult and intense time, as we're reminded in No Longer Home, the newly released debut title from two-person indie studio Humble Grove.

Harry who? Never mind that Potter kid, the next would-be wizarding prodigy is the star of Near-Mage, an upcoming Transylvanian spellcasting adventure from Stuck in Attic, the creators of Gibbous: A Cthulhu Adventure.

When Chien d'Or Studio suffered a setback in their Kickstarter campaign for The Whispering Valley earlier this year, the French Canadian developer set their sights on a smaller project to deliver first. That game is The Whisperer, which is due out on PC later this year.

It's amazing what you might see when you go for a walk in the forest: perhaps some lovely birds, gorgeous scenery, maybe even a submarine or two... Wait, what? If that last one sounds implausible, you're not familiar with M9 Games, the prolific indie developer of the newly released TARAKAN.

After jumping through all the brain-scratching hoops to inherit a rich uncle's estate, surely a life of leisure and luxury awaits, right? Well, not so fast, says Crimsonite Games, as they prepare to send players back out on a whole new puzzle-filled adventure in the upcoming Gordian Rooms 2: A curious island.

Circuses are meant to be fun places that bring joy to all those who visit, but for the traveling players that toil behind the scenes – especially those paraded in public as "freaks" in the early twentieth century – there can be far more tragedy than comedy involved. Never has that been truer than for the cast of Vlad Circus: Descend into Madness, an upcoming new pixel art adventure from Indiesruption, the Argentinian creators of Nine Witches: Family Disruption.

Goblins are usually the bad guys in any fantasy adventure – nasty, foul-tempered scavengers that would just as soon stab you in the back as lend a hand. The same is true in solo developer David Broček's upcoming Goblin's Quest, except here the titular monster just happens to be the "hero" rather than the villain.

First Sherlock Holmes, now Hercule Poirot. Exploring the younger years of famous detectives seems to be all the rage these days. The former from Frogwares we've known about for quite some time, while the latter was just revealed by Microids in the form of Blazing Griffin's upcoming Agatha Christie – Hercule Poirot: The First Cases.

Clowns can entertain, amuse or even terrify, but what are they really thinking behind the makeup? We now have the chance to find out in at least one particular case with today's release of Clown in a House, a retro-RPG-styled pixel art adventure from Krispy Animation.

Perhaps the scariest part of many dark fairy tales is that they happen to children. It's the same feeling of (relative) helplessness that drives the emotional impact of modern puzzle-platformers like INSIDE and Little Nightmares. The next game to tap into this children's nightmare scenario is Bramble: The Mountain King, a new horror adventure unveiled by indie Swedish developer Dimfrost Studio.

We've all been lost in a good book at one time or another, but it doesn't usually result in anything worse than a missed appointment or a burnt dinner. In The Bookwalker, an upcoming puzzle adventure by Russian developer Do My Best Games, it can happen literally and could get you killed.

Wandering through creepy and perilous old rudimentary-3D mansions goes way back to the likes of Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil, but Vertical Reach's upcoming captivity thriller The Tartarus Key is preparing to take players on a nostalgia-fueled return to the games of the early nineties, though without the combat of some of its more famous predecessors.

Imagine, for a moment, a perfect world: maybe somewhere lush, green, and tranquil, with none of the stress that marks modern life. Then imagine all that being taken away in an instant as objects of devastation fall from the sky. What would you do? That's the challenge posed by Planet of Lana, the upcoming debut adventure from Swedish indie Wishfully Studios.

The last place you'd normally look for a frog is a hot, dry, Wild West-style desert town. But then, the titular star of the Frog Detective games is no ordinary amphibian. That's a good thing, as the world's "second-best detective" is preparing to return for his third and final mystery adventure, Corruption at Cowboy County.
