Now more than ever, escapist fantasies are a common coping mechanism for the everyday doldrums and nagging anxieties we experience. But what if we actually got our wish and left everything and everyone we knew behind for a life of stress-free relaxation, but found that this fresh start didn't turn out to be all that we imagined it would be? This is the premise of The Life of Frederick Sommer, a short first-person adventure due out early next year from New Zealand-based developer Zakary Kinnaird and his studio The Appreciative Minimalist. 

Westmark Manor is the kind of epic, gothic estate that would have quite a story to tell if its walls could talk. Of course, in this case there’s a good chance they actually can, and the tale they’d tell is one of terror, occult rituals, dark secrets, and madness in Nodbrim Interactive’s upcoming Lovecraftian survival horror adventure.

Comic pirate adventures never go out of fashion in the adventure genre, and the latest game hoping join the ranks is indie German developer Christoph Schultz's upcoming Cleo: A Pirate's Tale, currently seeking funding through Kickstarter. 

Most adventure game protagonists have sticky fingers out of necessity, but it's rare to find one who enjoys stealing just for kicks or reputation. The titular protagonist of indie developers Verónica Rodríguez and Antonio Carlón's upcoming comic western adventure Lone McLonegan is one of the latter, as we'll find out later this year.

Perhaps that's a question to keep in mind for The Night is Grey, an upcoming adventure from indie developer Whalestork Interactive that describes itself as a "revivalist take on trauma."

If you enjoy both a good mystery novel and the interactivity and puzzles of videogames, you'll get two for the price of one in indie developer Cowleyfornia Studios' upcoming text-based adventure, Sarawak. 

Pandemic lockdowns aside, how hard can it be to acquire a simple musical instrument? Well, according to Cosmo D and the debut installment of his new standalone anthology series, Tales From Off-Peak City, the answer is: very. But also very "weird and wonderful," in the indie developer's typically surreal, "jazz-infused" way.

What's better than one gritty neo-noir mystery on the foreseeable horizon? How about at least four such mysteries, the first being free? That is the goal of indie developer Iron Noir Soft's Joe Kowalski Chronicles, which is set to kick off later this year with a free prequel chapter.

But while the first taste was free, this time it's gonna cost you, as The Sand and the Techno-pyramid will be sold commercially on a broader range of platforms.

Serving penance for one's sins, and especially for the sins of one's entire race, usually isn't something to look forward to, but it is when the path to redemption leads through a host of puzzles, as it does in indie developer Ben Lapid's upcoming adventure, There Was the Moon.

Facing our own mortality may be the LAST thing any of us feel like doing for real during a time of global pandemic, but virtually contemplating death is the very basis of the surreal indie puzzler, Arrog.

Adventure games often have players devising wacky inventions and makeshift solutions, but a more thoughtful approach will be needed in indie developer ustwo games' Assemble with Care, a very personal narrative-driven puzzler now available on PC. 

Often adventure games are given PC releases followed later by mobile ports, but in the case of SunRay Games' Mystic Escape: Diary of a Prisoner, that order has been completely reversed with the recent Steam launch of the Japanese-flavoured 3D puzzler.
