They say that time slows to a crawl in the moments before death, that a person’s whole life flashes before their eyes before their final breath. But what if, during that fateful moment, a portly figure became visible, leaping between shadows, dancing madly and altering reality to ensure you reach the other side? That figure is the eponymous protagonist of the newly-released Felix the Reaper, a romantic comedy about “the life of Death,” developed by Kong Orange and published by Daedalic Entertainment.

Of all the challenges facing us today, one of the most absurdly perilous may just be navigating the tricky waters of political correctness. Next year, if indie Australian developer David Longo is able to raise enough funds through Kickstarter for his upcoming debut adventure, players will get to choose how to do that very thing in a satirically amusing way in Political Quest.

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Laura Bow, but she looks like she hasn't aged a day. In fact, the classic Sierra heroine has been given a serious makeover for an all-new adventure by indie developer NineZyme Entertainment, who have just pulled back the curtain on Laura Bow and the Mechanical Codex.

Amanita Design has been relatively quiet about its upcoming Creaks (which has slipped now to 2020), but perhaps one reason why is that the acclaimed Czech developer was busy making the newly-released Pilgrims on the sly.

Experiencing one's own dreams is surreal enough, but imagine finding yourself forced to visit other people's subconscious instead. Actually, there's no need to imagine as you can do just that in the newly-released psychological horror game 3rd eye.

Beards come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and you'll get to try on a variety of different types next summer if indie developer Cleardot Games is able to secure Kickstarter funding for the upcoming RPG-styled adventure Who Stole My Beard?

Oct

Lots of adventure games task players with solving murders, but covering them up? That's a whole different story – or in the case of Blyts' newly-released Nobodies, eleven different stories.

Adventure games let us play as all different types of protagonists: swashbuckling pirates, brave knights, afterlife tour guides, bikers, detectives and more. But... a USB cord? Yes, that's exactly who will be starring in 205 Studio's Zachary's Note next year, assuming it's able to meet its crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter.

Many games offer a rather sobering view of Earth's future after a cataclysmic disaster. But what of those who survive, trying to reconstruct an understanding of the past through the scant evidence left behind? This is the premise behind Some Distant Memory, an exploratory adventure from Galvanic Games coming later this year.

The dangers of the UK separating from the EU thanks to its contentious Brexit vote are widely known, but one consequence flying under the radar is... a zombie apocalypse? Better add that one to the top of the list, at least according to Ghoul Britannia: Land of Hope and Gorey, a satirical point-and-click indie adventure coming to Early Access next month.

If you're an astronaut, crash landing on an alien planet is about the worst thing that could happen. If you're a player behind a computer screen controlling said astronaut, however, it's a whole lot more fun, as we'll find out next year when two-man indie German developer ArtFactory Jalokivi release their debut adventure, AC-0209.

Rabbits can be cute and cuddly, but in adventure games they can also have a bit of a dark side. This is sure to be true once again in Jinx-It Games' upcoming episodic trilogy, Framing Dawes.

Indigenous voices are significantly underrepresented in the gaming industry, but indie developer Achimostawinan Games and a group of supportive Kickstarter backers are hoping to change that with the upcoming cybernoir mystery, Hill Agency: PURITY&decay.

Aug

For their last adventure, the indie husband and wife developers at Brain&Brain created an interactive Scandinavian folklore called Burly Men at Sea. Their next game, however, will take place much farther west on much drier land when Wooden Nickel is released next year.

Adventure games are slow-paced by their very nature, with no big hurry to get where you're going. But what if you're going nowhere? What if your goal is simply to stay right where you are... for 400 years!? That's precisely what players will be tasked to do when indie German developer Studio Seufz releases The Longing later this year.
