You might think not much would matter when the end of the world as we know it is about to end, but in indie developer scriptwelder's upcoming Don't Escape: 4 Days in a Wasteland, the very opposite is true – everything matters all the more, and it's up to you to navigate the neverending trials of a mid-apocalyptic world.

Not every game requires loads of comedy, action, or witty dialogue. Sometimes an adventure can be laid back, quiet, and thoughtful. Indie developer Morteshka's atmospheric The Mooseman aims to provide just such an experience, arriving on consoles now after its release on PC last year.

The name Skyrim probably conjures up images of dragons and warriors, assassins and factions, orcs and elves and other familiar fantasy elements. What you likely don't associate with it is a "time travel murder mystery set in a mythological city", but that's exactly what indie developer Modern Storyteller delivered in 2015 with The Forgotten City, a highly-acclaimed Skyrim mod. And soon even those without access to Bethesda's popular Elder Scrolls RPG will have the chance to play it for themselves in a new "re-imagined" version of the game coming next year.

The late 1970s brought us many memorable (and some cringe-inducing) cultural elements, including the rudimentary first home PCs and Ridley Scott's classic movie Alien. Indie developer Benjy Bates is hoping to both recapture the nostalgia of that bygone area and scare the pants off while he's at it in the text-based horror trilogy The Outpost Nine, which has just debuted on Steam.

Most adventures games are more about the journey than the destination, but that is especially true of Shifting Tides' appropriately-titled The Sojourn, a fantastical 3D puzzler coming next year.

Jul

For such a visual medium, a surprising number of games have started using blindness as a central gameplay conceit in recent years. The latest such title to do so will make sighted people happy they can see, however, as indie Italian developer Lunar Great Wall Studios has pulled back the veil on its beautiful upcoming fantasy adventure Another Sight.

Jul

Many fairy tales involve someone being held prisoner by a wicked witch or wizard, but in indie developer Fairy Forest's newly-released The Tower of Beatrice, you're a thief actually trying to break into the eponymous keep.

Killmonday Games knows a bit about offbeat stories told from a child's perspective, having successfully debuted in 2015 with the impressive Fran Bow. Now the two-person indie team is returning to that same universe with a new interactive story called Little Misfortune.

If the name Yeli Orog sounds eerily alien and possibly terrifying, then you've probably got the right idea about the new FMV-based, Myst-style adventure coming soon on Steam.

They may have fallen a little short the first time around, but indie developer Suzaku found success in their second Kickstarter campaign for Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story, a mix of Blade Runner-esque dystopian science fiction with a classic J-Horror ghost story.

Last year, Deceptive Games immersed players in a house full of traps and puzzles in The Initiate. But that wasn't the end of the trials, as now the indie developer has released a sequel called The First Interviews on Steam Early Access.

The biggest challenge facing many superheroes doesn't actually seem to be the evil foes they encounter, but rather how best to reconcile their superpowered identities with their mild-mannered concealed personas. This is especially true for the titular star of Deedema Games's upcoming Flipping Filip.

Have you ever wondered how F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby might have turned out if J. R. R. Tolkien had written it? While Swedish developer Valiant Game Studio probably isn’t expecting to make the next Great American Novel (or Video Game, in this case), their upcoming episodic fantasy adventure Pendula Swing is looking to such celebrated works for inspiration.

Getting trapped in an abandoned old castle may not sound like a whole lot of fun, but it is when solving puzzles is the only means of escape, like in indie developer Pim Nijdam's upcoming Moon Castle.

Lust may be one of the seven deadly sins, but it's probably okay if the source of your yearning is Lust for Darkness, a new first-person supernatural horror game released today on PC.
