In the real world, our shadows follow wherever we go. Not necessarily so in dream worlds, however, as is the case in Shady Part of Me, a newly released puzzle-platformer from indie developer Douze Dixièmes.

Road trip adventures have always held a certain appeal, but surely never more so than at a time when we're all cooped up and itching to get out. Fortunately, it's looking more and more likely that we'll be able to do just that next year – not only physically, but virtually as well in the form of Open Roads, a new adventure from Fullbright, the creator of Gone Home and Tacoma.

Pakistan may not exactly be a hotbed of videogame development, but perhaps that's starting to change with the release of indie developer BT Studios' horror adventure Deceased.

Adventure games are usually about brains over brawn, but occasionally they let us have both. (Who doesn't fondly remember delivering satisfying knuckle sandwiches to Nazis in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis?) Another such game that intends to give players the best of both worlds is BROK the InvestiGator, an upcoming classic adventure / beat 'em up hybrid from COWCAT.

We often say that emotionally isolated people keep their feelings “locked away;” we invite them to “open up” and “let others in.” These are just expressions, of course, but in DOOR: Inner Child, a new project by one-man Korean developer PLAY Mephistowaltz, this concept takes on a much more literal meaning as players unlock and move past barriers on a quest to heal a dreamlike world that has fallen dangerously out of balance.

Lots of adventure games involve a degree of questionable ethics to achieve one's goals, but few are quite so brazen about it as indie developer Mighty Yell's upcoming point-and-click adventure, The Big Con.

There are a disturbing number of things that threaten the future of humanity: climate disaster, nuclear war, and of course the spectre of deadly pandemics. But it's the one we're not prepared for that's ultimately going to get us: a vengeful bear. At least, it is if indie developer Kilzemol Games' upcoming comedy sci-fi adventure The Koala Rebellion is to be believed.

Cats seem to see the world very differently from us, but in French developer BlueTwelve Studio's upcoming feline adventure Stray, it's the world itself that is much different than our own.

As 2020 has taught us, everything can change in a hurry. And yet despite such hardships, some things never change. The next adventure in the long-running Carol Reed saga will represent a little bit of both when Quarantine Diary is released early next year.

While shows like The Walking Dead and the films of George Romero remain as popular as ever, zombies themselves don’t get a lot of respect. An Ash Williams or a Shaun Riley may persist in the public consciousness, but there’s little thought spared for the thousands of anonymous ghouls they had to headshot, decapitate and smash across the face to get there. It’s this injustice that Surprised Monkey Studio looks to correct with their first game, the retro-styled Surviving the Humans, which is now seeking funds on Kickstarter.

Story-driven point-and-click pixel art adventures set in and around New Orleans have a fine track record, so why not go back to the well once again? That's precisely what indie developer Geography of Robots plans to do with its upcoming mystery Norco: Faraway Lights.

We're surely all feeling the effects of not seeing our friends enough this year, so what if we had an AI friend to play with instead? Soon you can treat yourself to that very thing, as indie developer Not a Sailor Studios has announced the upcoming release of Buddy Simulator 1984. Just remember the saying: be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

Commercial text adventures may have largely gone the way of old gaming devices like the Amiga, Game Boy and Atari ST, but with the recent release of indie developer Hugo Labrande's Tristam Island, you can enjoy a nostalgic return to both.

Certain objects of importance to us are often able to trigger memories upon sight, but what if those objects actually possessed memories of their own that could be tapped into? This is the premise behind indie developer hako life's newly released Unreal Life.

Psychological horror fans will soon get the chance to return to the world of 2012’s Anna with the upcoming release of Nascence, the first title in a planned trilogy of standalone adventures called “Anna’s Songs.” The new game will continue to “explore the relationship we have with religions, organized and not,” while expanding upon the story of its predecessor, though it does not require knowledge of Anna to fully appreciate.
