Often adventures require players to travel around the globe or outer space in pursuit of some epic cause, but in indie developer Littlefield Studio's newly released Machinika Museum, you can just stay where you are and let the puzzling pieces of a wondrous galactic mystery come to you. 

Space. Harsh, unforgiving and yet awe-inspiring, it's the final frontier, where nobody can hear you scream (with frustration). Upcoming zero-g physics puzzler Heavenly Bodies, by Australian indie developer 2pt Interactive, evokes the early days of the space race, where only those with the right stuff need apply and even the most mundane task in outer space is a deadly challenge that can "go from the sublime to the ridiculous so fast it gives you whiplash." 

Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can change our life stories dramatically. That's not just true of real life, but literally so in indie developer Hiding Spot's upcoming lite adventure, Beacon Pines.

Now that we're more than a year into the pandemic, we're starting to see more games that actually incorporate the trials of COVID-19 into their stories. One such game due out next month is indie developer Burning Sunset's The World After, a point-and-click FMV adventure set during the 2020 lockdown in France. 

Stop motion is a slow, painstaking, and therefore expensive process to do and do well, which is why we rarely see it employed in video games. If enough fans are willing to support it through crowdfunding, however, we could have another such game on the horizon in the form of Vokabulantis, a "love-driven" puzzle-platformer that can be played solo or cooperatively with a partner.

French developer DONTNOD has been busy working on other properties (Tell Me Why, Twin Mirror) since their last foray into the universe for which they're best known. But that doesn't mean the Life Is Strange franchise has been neglected in the meantime; it's merely been handed off to Deck Nine Games for the next installment, True Colors. 

Usually adventure games start out on PC and eventually get ported to mobile devices, but sometimes the process is reversed. Case in point: the debut installment of Pine Studio's Faraway series, which is available now for PC in an updated "Director's Cut" version. 

Usually adventure games are leisurely affairs, allowing players all the time in the world to overcome obstacles. But occasionally time is of the essence – like when you're shrinking and have to hurry before you're too small to reverse the process. Such is the case with Size Matters, a first-person adventure from Mazen Games that has just emerged from Early Access.

While many of us are looking forward to leaving the cold of winter behind, we'll gladly begin looking ahead to the next Antarctic co-op puzzle excursion from Total Mayhem Games, this one entitled We Were Here Forever. 

When you think of film noir, your first association probably isn't "futuristic VR robot mystery," but that's exactly what we'll be getting later this year in indie Israeli developer Peanut Button's upcoming The Secret of Retropolis.

Not all detective mysteries need to be long, complex investigations. Sometimes it’s nice to jump in, solve a case in one sitting, and then sit back and do other things until the next client walks through your proverbial door. Indie Hungarian studio RVL Games thinks so too, and to that end is currently finishing up development on the debut installment of a series of occult-themed “micro-adventures” called Classified Stories.

Why is it that when aliens come to our planet, they always head straight for a farm and rarely leave any indisputable evidence? In indie developer DEKLAZON’s upcoming first-person horror adventure, They Are Here, players will get to investigate one such rural UFO sighting for themselves and hopefully document conclusive proof once and for all.

Death is rare in adventure games, and when it does happen it often seems to be not an end but rather just the beginning of a whole new adventure. And that's equally true for animals as well as humans, as we're about to find out once again in indie developer Captilight's upcoming Path of Kami.

Normally the worst things you have to worry about on a camping trip are bugs and bad weather, but these are the least of the concerns for the protagonist of solo developer and composer Jeff Winner's Horror Story: Hallowseed, a psychological first-person thriller available now through Early Access.

Compared to more flamboyant courtroom drama fare like the Ace Attorney series, it might seem far less glamorous to set players behind the scenes, piecing together evidence and preparing documents that will ultimately determine whether someone is prosecuted or let go. But it becomes a lot more interesting when it includes actual battles against the accused, using the very documents you are preparing. This is the unique premise of Legal Dungeon, an “interactive novel adventure game” that was recently released for Nintendo Switch following its earlier debut on PC.
