Where does a visual novel end and an adventure game begin, or vice versa? Indie Italian developer Studio V hopes to blur that line completely – or better yet, make you forget about the question altogeher – with its recently released future noir mystery Dry Drowning.

Next time some tells you to take a hike, instead of being offended (or actually going for one) you can happily comply by diving into Adam Robinson-Yu's relaxing exploratory adventure A Short Hike. 

Murder mysteries are fairly common in the adventure genre, but instead of scouring crime scenes and interrogating suspects in the newly-released The Black Widow, here you'll have to solve a historical real-world case using only your wits and a Ouija board. 

Normally the road to redemption leads through some dark, personally painful places, but that's decidedly not the case in indie developer Benjamin Gregg's upcoming Kumo, a lovely looking 3D adventure that is currently seeking crowdfunding through Kickstarter.

With a few rare exceptions, Leisure Suit Larry is about as close as adventure games tend to get to pornography, but Petru Leontescu and a small group of developers are hoping to crank the sex level up a notch with The Hotel, a point-and-click indie adventure that is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter. 

Opposites may attract, but the real secret to lasting friendship is for one companion’s abilities to complement those of the other. In the upcoming 3D puzzle-adventure Weakless, not only does this situation lead to a stronger relationship between the two playable protagonists, it’s also the key to saving an entire civilization: their own.

Conducting a murder investigation isn't exactly the same as conducting a symphony orchestra, but the two will be inextricably linked in Kibou Entertainment's upcoming Blood Opera Crescendo, which is currently raising funds through Kickstarter.

Normally fantasy adventures come in two types: the light, comedic cartoon adventures like The Legend of Kyrandia and Simon the Sorcerer, and the dark, brooding "high" fantasies in the vein of The Lord of the Rings. Leave it to a wacky group of Italian developers called 2finger to upset this delicate balance by blending the two styles together in MADievals, their debut point-and-click adventure available now through Early Access.

Dementia is no laughing matter, but indie developers RP Studios and Outriders are hoping it can serve as both an entertaining and insightful one in their upcoming short exploratory adventure, Back Then.

To be deprived of one's dreams is always a horrible prospect, but it's all the more terrible when one's dreams have the power to create worlds. This is the fate that threatens to befall the inhabitants of indie Austrian developer Phantom Fox Interactive's upcoming Children of Lumera.
