If there's one thing that adventure games have taught us, it's that exploring creepy castles in the dark on your own is probably not a great idea. Unless you enjoy scaring the bejeebers out of yourself, in which case you'll be happy to know that UnderDread has now opened its own castle doors to intrepid adventurers.

Last year, an unheralded little adventure called MechaNika introduced adventure gamers to Mango Protocol's offbeat, appropriately twisted "Psychotic" world, a meta setting in which the indie Spanish developer has plans for multiple stories. The next such adventure to take place in this world is Agatha Knife, a spin-off prequel of sorts, taking place before the events of its predecessor with a new lead protagonist.

By themselves, both climate change and nuclear war could drastically alter the way humanity functions, but what if both of these catastrophes came along to wipe us out? This is the apocalyptic premise of the upcoming episodic adventure The Descendant, set to debut later this month from Swedish developer Gaming Corps.

Ron Gilbert's "The Cave" was a living, breathing entity, but imagine if an entire city were alive – what stories it could tell! What kind of stories? To find that answer, you might want to consider backing A Place for the Unwilling, which is currently seeking crowdfunding through Kickstarter.

What would you do if you had only five days left before Doomsday? Why, you’d celebrate, of course! At least, you would if you’re an adventure gamer and the apocalypse in question is Deponia Doomsday, a surprise revelation from Daedalic due for imminent arrival.

There's a fine line between genius and madness, they say. In Layers of Fear, the newly-released "psychedelic horror" from Polish developers Bloober Team, that line has well and truly been crossed. Inspired by masterpiece paintings, this looks set to be a game best played late at night with the volume up, the lights off, and as much courage as you can muster.

Be careful what you wish for. Like Tom Hanks in the movie Big, the hero of Glitch Games' latest puzzler A Short Tale gets more than he expected when he asks to be small again. It may be a room-escape game at heart, but it's a Toy Story-esque tale of talking toys, oversized furniture and viewing the everyday from a new perspective, and it's available now across a variety of platforms.

Lucid dreaming sounds great: all the flexibility and imagination of a dream but with enough awareness to decide what happens and live out your fantasies. But what happens when the dream turns into a nightmare and you can't wake up? That's the premise of DARQ, an upcoming psychological horror game from indie developer Unfold Games.

If a town inspired by David Lynch's Twin Peaks and populated by anthropomorphic animals sounds like just your twisted kind of place to visit, you'll be happy to know you can book your room now at the eerie Rusty Lake Hotel.

Cyan’s Myst formula of graphic adventures has been successfully implemented by many developers over the two-plus decades that have come and gone since. The latest to follow in these footsteps is Cyprus-based indie Lydia Kovalenko with her debut title Panmorphia, which is now available for PC, Mac, and Linux.

With Shardlight now in the home stretch towards release, developer Wadjet Eye Games is already looking ahead to its next project, which has now been confirmed to be Unavowed.

Ever since To the Moon tugged on our heartstrings back in 2011, the game's many fans have been clamouring for a sequel. We haven't been cheated in the meantime, with the smaller A Bird Story released along with several holiday "minisodes" and even a platypus-themed comic, but a full-fledged follow-up has remained elusive. Until now, as at long last indie developer Kan Gao and Freebird Games have unveiled Finding Paradise.

Myst-style adventures may be an endangered species these days, but there's a new one being conceived right now in the imaginary world of Anamedia.

In 2013, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons took the adventure gaming world by storm. Not to be outdone by the dual boys' act, now it's brother and sister Thomas and Lily's turn in a somewhat similarly styled game called The Land of Lamia.
