Dead Drop – A Carol Reed Mystery (2024)

Erik finds himself ensnared in a web of intrigue when an anonymous client recruits him for a seemingly innocuous task: to collect trivial information about the government agency he works for. Initially, Erik is captivated by his covert assignment and appreciates the extra income it brings.

However, as the tasks grow increasingly complex and veer into the realm of illegality, Erik comes to a stark realization—he's in too deep to simply walk away. In a bid to extricate himself from this precarious situation, he reaches out to Carol. Together, they aim to not only terminate Erik's involvement but also to uncover the true agenda of his enigmatic client.

Eager to make some money for her upcoming vacation, Carol agrees to help Dalton Jonson to investigate the recent disappearance of his wife, Daria. Carol’s investigation soon reveals that an elusive video game designer seems to have a very hostile attitude towards Daria. In a series of eccentric and unsuccessful games, the game designer is taking responsibility for three recent brutal murders: three men who were sedated, strangled, and placed in public locations with their hands tied behind their backs.

A part of the national forest has been closed down for almost a decade due to a planned controlled burning. When the area was opened up recently, the body of a deceased elderly man was found close to a disused animal feeding station. The name and address of Carol's friend Stina was found in the man's pocket, although he was totally unknown to Stina. Unravelling the connection between the dead man and Stina leads Carol to a summer colony which has been closed down by the authorities, and where no humans have set foot in over 20 years.

Alvin is a 16-year-old loner with a passion for skateboarding. He lives with his mother, who is a stickler for COVID-19 safety procedures. In order to pursue his favorite pastime, Alvin sneaks out at dawn, while his mother works nights. However, when he doesn't come home one day, his mother finds herself with a lot more than the coronavirus to worry about. Carol is called on to solve this mystery amidst the height of the pandemic, with all the limitations and challenges it entails.

Kevo Walthin, an acquaintance of Carol's friend Stina, has been reported missing. Kevo is heavily involved in geocaching, an outdoor recreational activity in which participants hide and seek objects at specific locations all over the world. In order to shed light on the chain of events that led up to Kevo's disappearance, Carol has to travel to numerous geocaching locations he had visited in recent weeks.

Fall of April, The (2019)

Carol agrees to help a friend of a friend, Andrea, who has suffered a temporary drug-induced memory loss. Carol's investigations quickly lead her to the unsolved murder of Andrea's daughter two years ago. The murder has remained unsolved, but when connecting it to the recent events Carol discovers close links to a Swedish Arctic balloon expedition carried out in 1915.

It's the middle of the summer, and Carol has been down with a flu for nearly three weeks. Just as she's starting to feel better, she's contacted by Immodia, whom she met on a previous case. Immodia is nervous because the man she is trying to persuade to marry her, the recent widower Henrik, has suddenly disappeared. She wants Carol to "catch" him. Carol is only moderately interested in the case, but decides to take it and soon discovers Henrik's disappearance turns out to be far more complex than a widower getting cold feet.

The hotel where Carol's friend works receives a suicide note from a "Louise", who doesn't seem to have any connection to the hotel. Worried by the unpleasant message, Carol's friend asks her to try to determine its origin. Carol's investigations lead to a woman in her 40s, who has recently supposedly committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. In speaking to her friends and relatives, retracing her steps from her final days, Carol gets the impression of a creative, vivacious woman who prepared games for her boyfriend – not of a person who was about to take her own life.

Carol has written a book about one of her previous adventures, but has received nothing but rejections from publishers so far. One of those publishers, however, wants to hire her to find a missing eccentric author. The author's wife was killed six years ago, and just before his own disappearance, a young woman was found murdered, with pages from the author's latest book stuffed into her mouth.

In 1994, the Swedish engineer, entrepreneur and adventurer Malte Stierngranat was buried in a pyramid that he had designed himself. It was erected almost half a century prior to his death. Years later, Malte's son Erik and his family go missing. Carol Reed is contacted by the families caretaker and cleaner, George, and has to delve into Malte's illustrious life and legacy.

Carol is approached by a mysterious man who wants her help, but declines when he refuses to reveal his identity. The morning after, his body is found floating in the Norrköping River. Carol decides to determine why the dead man wanted to hire her, but after discovering several connections between him and the unsolved 1986 murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, she soon finds herself in deadly danger.

Carol's friend Stina is going through her dead father's belongings and finds her grandfather's obituary. According to it, he died much later than she was led to believe. After asking Carol to investigate, Carol's investigatons soon reveal that there is much more to Stina's suspicions than simply a misprint in an obituary, and that Stina's family history is darker and more twisted than either of them could have imagined.

Did the artist Christina Falk really kill herself? If so, why did she phone Carol the day before her death, wanting to hire her? And was it really Christina that called Carol? With a dead client, Carol hasn’t even got a case. And with so little information, she hasn’t got any clues either. But when she uncovers several curious circumstances leading up to Christina’s death, Carol just can’t let it go.

Carol’s friend Oscar, a retired doctor, discovers a dead man outside an old run down cottage while on his morning stroll. When the police show up, the body has mysteriously disappeared. Oscar is infuriated that the police don’t believe him, and he asks Carol to try to find out what really happened. Starting with a telephone number that she finds on a small piece of paper where Oscar found the body, Carol is soon in the midst of a sinister mystery involving much more than a missing dead body.

Carol has plans for her latest Midsummer's Eve in Sweden, until she is approached by her allotment neighbor, who suspects that his slightly handicapped son is somehow involved in a murder. The fifth game in the Carol Reed series takes the amateur sleuth through dark tunnels, abandoned military areas, derelict mines, and beautiful places of historical importance, leading all the way up to the Royal Family.

On her fourth year in Sweden, Carol finally decides to have a long summer vacation, reading novels in her hammock and looking after her allotment. However, her vacation is soon interrupted when she receives a letter from a friend visiting Paris. The person he's travelling with has just gotten a message that a vagrant has been killed in his Swedish apartment, after sneaking in there to sleep. Starting off with no clues at all, Carol is soon wrapped up in her longest and most complex case to date.
