I don’t particularly like GK (certainly less than DotT), but it would win over DotT and TLJ. It’s not in simple numbers and when people relax a little from voting we can easily (disap)prove that (if the turnout is above 35 I guarantee it would happen).

Yay logic problems. I love those Grin
We know 2 facts:

1- More fans in this tournament love Grim than DOTT.
2- More fans in this tournament love GK than PD.

Most of your later reasoning is sound, but to be super nitpicky those facts should really be:

1- More fans in this tournament have currently voted for Grim than for DOTT in their versus match.
2- More fans in this tournament have currently voted for GK than for PD in their versus match.

Given the relative ease with which Grim Fandango is winning against DotT and GK1 is winning against Tex, and given how hard-fought and close the semi-finals were, I think it’s safe to say that the final should have been Grim Fandango vs. Gabriel Knight.

In other words: I agree with those that state that said semifinal was in fact the true final…

GK1 and GK2 were also pretty darn close.  Just saying.  Yum

Deciding between those two was by far the toughest decision I had to make all tournament.

1- Grim Fandango
2- Day of the Tentacle
3- Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
4- Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive
5- Monkey Island 2: Lechuck’s Revenge
6- The Secret of Monkey Island
7- The Longest Journey
8- Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars

That is a really excellent list from game 1 to 8. All of them are very deserving to be here.

The Final between Grim Fandango and DOTT is still technically ongoing, but I agree, it’s a good selection of games that made it to the top eight, even if we inevitably lost some other worthy contenders along the way.

It’s interesting to compare the versus match results to the AG Staff’s Top 100 list:

1. Grim Fandango
2. The Longest Journey
3. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
4. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
5. Riven
6. Day of the Tentacle
7. The Last Express
8. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge

And to the total points in the group stage of the tournament:

1. The Curse of Monkey Island
2. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
3. The Secret of Monkey Island
4. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
5. The Longest Journey
6. Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
7. Grim Fandango
8. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

(Not to mention the group stage results can be sorted several other ways. The group stage results also come with the important caveat that the points across groups are admittedly skewed and are not really meant to be compared to each other. But then, the versus match brackets create their own issues with ranking, so neither is a perfect system if ranking is the goal.)

No right or wrong lists, as far as I’m concerned. Those are all terrific games in all three versions of a possible top eight.

So Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon, nor any PS3/handheld exclusives making it through the group stage isn’t a travesty? Or The Last Express & Riven exiting in the first knock-out round? Wink Grin

I must reply here Smile

I agree that CCS is along Toonstruck the biggest injustice of the tournament, they should have went to the R32 (probably not more), but apart from that I don’t see many games that should fall lower for others to go up, because that’s a real question, which games are placed higher than they should. I personally have at least 30 games that I consider Top 10-15 material and there isn’t space for all of them Smile

The big injustice here are portable games (DS, 3DS or Vita). They easily deserve to be in better places but not enough people played them so it’s understandable. I would be curious to see how they would stack against each other.

Ooh.  A handheld only tournament would be interesting.  But then it’d probably still go to the ones that the most people have played.  (Phoenix Wright, most likely)  Still would be interesting to see though.

And I also second the idea someone had earlier of having a competition like this for the best non-adventure game in the general forum.

What i find strange is that DoTT has verb interface, that stuff is archaic, still many
AGamers here prefer DoTT over other games. Meaning that interface takes precedence.
Still i found some people not like Thimbleweedpark decision to revive that , and many new PnCs by fans, don’t use it.

For nostalgic purposes it might be good, but its not evergreen.

The game is more than just its interface, you know.
You don’t have to look to DotT, even. Take Grim Fandango instead: nearly everybody keeps mentioning the clunky controls yet GF is still winning this…

Is GF winning despite the clunky controls…or could the remaster release have helped just a little bit?

The great thing about the remaster is that you have the original game with PnC controls and that just made GF the best game ever Laughing

I wonder to what an extend the remaster had any effect on the tournament’s final vote?

I actually like the verb interface and Thimbleweedpark decision to revive it. What I don’t like though are the graphics from the Maniac Mansion Era and I think reading the comments that I’m not the only one (I do love graphics that came afterward like GK, Dott and so on).

I think that without the remaster, I’d have voted for DOTT. It was a close thing but playing the remaster made me decide to vote for Grim

If it had any influence, then I think it is mainly because it has gotten some extra exposure recently, and perhaps also a few members that never played the original game. Most players tend to love the game despite of the controls, or like me, the controls never actually bothered them.

Also remember that it is the original game that got the top position on the top 100 list.

Come to think of it, I’m more curious to how much the remake of GK1 has influenced how GK1 faired in this tournament. Even though many hates that remake, then the haters are mainly the fans of the original, who will vote for the game regardless, but it might have brought in some votes from gamers that never played the original, or people who had forgotten how good a game it actually is.

I think this actually had a bigger influence than the GF remaster version, but all of this is of course just speculations, and we will never know the actual answer.

I think it’s funny that the final match is between the #1 game in the AG top 100 from 2012 and the #1 game in the AG top 20 from 2001. Tongue
