At first glance, I thought it was Africa, but I see too many other cultures so I’m going with travel.

He even has one of those old chests at the bottom of the bed.

That makes sense although it doesn’t quite fit with the two pictures on the wall and the roll-desk.

I’m currently struggling with designing a detective game myself so this is very interesting. I guess the pitfall with this approach could be that the player gets annoyed when the mistakes piles up and you can’t correct anything besides replaying the entire game. If the players chances of figuring things out feels completely fair it could turn out great though.
