Ups, meant the porter

Porters’ lodge
Hundreds of pigeonholes line the walls of this large room. A doorway to the southeast leads out to a courtyard.
A porter stands here, idly sorting through some papers.
Tacked up on the wall is the college gate list.
> read list
> ask porter about malcolm
>read list
It’s a list of fellows and students of Biblioll college, together with their room numbers. You can try looking up surnames or room numbers.
>ask porter about malcolm
“Eh?” asks the porter, cupping his hand to his ear.
> ask porter about malcolm
>look for spencer on list
> ask porter about malcolm
We did that. I think the porter is somewhat deaf.
>look up spencer on list
According to the gate list, Doctor Spencer lives in room A5.
> ask porter about malcolm
We did that. I think the porter is somewhat deaf.
I thought he just wasn’t paying attention and that repeating the question once he’d noticed us would elicit some response.
Anyway, off we go.

First Court
The elegant clock tower above the college chapel dominates the skyline to the northeast.
The gate is closed, but a little wicket gate stands open.
>n
“A” Staircase, Ground Floor
This hallway smells of ancient varnish and carbolic soap. To the east is the door to A1; to the west is the door to A2; stairs lead up; and a doorway leads south onto First Court.
(assuming two rooms per floor)

“A” Staircase, First Floor
A placard on the wall of this narrow landing reads, “Entertaining of females in undergraduate rooms is strictly prohibited on pain of rustication. By order of the Bursar.” You feel distinctly unwelcome. To the east is the door to A3; to the west is the door to A4; creaky wooden stairs lead up to the second floor and down to the ground floor.

“A” Staircase, Second Floor
A dirty skylight admits a little light into this second floor landing. To the east is the door to A5; to the west is the door to A6; and creaky wooden stairs lead down to the first floor.
>knock on A5
You knock loudly, but you hear no-one stir inside the room.
So, did you like the the game and the twist? I remember you were very positive about Hadean Lands. Totally different game though.
It really dragged in the middle, with all the fiddling with the spy gadgets, but the twist was fun (it was entirely predictable, obviously, but really well executed).
Really? I’m not that smart, which may be a good thing in this particular case. I loved the twist. None of us saw it coming, although with hindsight we were pretty close with our comments and speculations.
>throw stone at window
You lack the nerve, especially with the constable watching you.I’ve waited about 20 turns and he won’t leave, so I assume waiting isn’t the answer. He also shows up as soon as you arrive at Biblioll St no matter where he was before.
Oh well, killing a parrot behind glass wouldn’t be much use anyway.
Yeah. I know. But I’m not impressed with the this first puzzle. Convoluted and rather idiotic. I’m sure it would get lots of votes in the cat-moustache category. Nothing wrong with bizarre puzzles in the right setting though.
And while I’m at it, why is the busker actively helping us? He has no reason to. A woman he doesn’t know hands him some key to some lock.
Back to the here and now.
> open door
I bet it’s locked.
Butter my buns and call me a biscuit! - Agent A
>open door
Which do you mean, the door to A5 or the door to A6?
>A5
It seems to be locked.
Smart Karlok.
Let’s go down to the porter again and see if we can find the key.
> x pigeonholes

Tacked up on the wall is the college gate list.
>x pigeonholes
There are hundreds of pigeonholes, one for each fellow and student of the college, labelled by surname only. You’ll have to be specific about which one you want. To refer to a particular person’s pigeonhole, use his surname; for example, “Johnson’s pigeonhole”.
>x porter
The porter is an ancient chap, wrinkled of face and gnarled of hand. He is carrying a ring of keys.
