I just found out that my and Mr J's best friends are splitting up.
I'm speechless and I feel all empty inside. I'm also very selfish thinking about all the fun we've had when we've travelled together abroad and in our boats in the archipelago and all the fun we're missing out on now that they split up.

Oh that's really bad news Jelena! I have never been in a situation like you and I hope I never will. It will be hard to stay friends with them both, won't it? Poor them, and you! (hugs)

9 days anymore until my winter vacation starts.
I will see my darling M again and this time she will come back with me! A bit strangely I don't yet really feel like I'm going on a trip... hmm...

Last Sunday, the elephant Annabel was put down in Emmen, a town not too far from Enschede here in NL. During playing with the other elephants she fell through the electric fence into the dry moat surrounding their pen. They tried to get her out but she wouldn't stand up anymore. So they eventually got a crane to lift her up, but even than she didn't stand. They decided that they had to put her down. At the section they discovered that she had broken her neck in the fall. It turned out she had osteoarthritis, which also affected her sense of balance. It's strange and horrific that the people who took care for her didn't know about that. The poor animal has suffered for days in that moat.

When it comes to animals and health problems, they aren't as easily seen as you might think. When you see an animal everyday (be it one you are a caretaker of or a pet), there are some things that an owner/caretaker is very observant of and can notice small changes. Sometimes, things escape your notice. One of the reasons can be that the change is so small over a long period of time that it's not that noticeable until it becomes bad. Osteoarthritis can be one of those. It's not like a sudden lameness. Wild animals can also be very good at masking pain and hiding a more severe problem

*warm thoughts going out to tsa and Jelena* May your friends find peace on the roads ahead of them, and may your hearts both be at ease (Also, good luck next month, tsa).
And thanks for the kind words, folks. I've almost come to grips with Charlie being gone. I hadn't realised how close I'd gotten to him. Now I just have to get used to Lucky fussing about not being allowed to go outside alone anymore. |

Thanks Lee. I'm actually looking forward to it a bit. I will have time to finish some long-lying jobs in the house, and Maruca will be here for a week around Easter! Yay!
