By the standards of modern adventure games, this is very tough. There are frequent deaths, tons of extra items, and sometimes you need items from other worlds for the one you’re in now (although generally you can only use locally acquired items). Generally, the puzzles are somewhat intuitive, but there are often tricky bits. Nevertheless, it is very much a classic, point-and-click adventure, story-driven and strong there too.
The only issue I have with this game is the ending. It is profoundly unsatisfying. Both the original ending and the silly ending for the American version don’t give much of a payoff. The original ending is marginally better, but depressing. But they don’t really fit a theme or give a lesson for the game.
