Adventure Game Studio
This is the easiest and fastest 2d game engine.
If you are looking to make an adventure game this is your choice.
It has it’s own scripting system tied to the editor.
The scripting is lots easier than programming.
It is a great way to start.
I suggest using png files for characters and backgrounds.
Use 32-bit images and Png.
The main version 3.2.1 has a max resolution of 1024x768.
There are 2 versions that can handle higher resolution. I am using 1280x720.
Watch out on the forums. The leaders and mods are very picky about the rules.
You are likely to get a little frustrated with the picky rules following.
Not a problem if you are a rule following person.

Feel free to contact me at my email to ask technical questions.
I use the free Gimp paint program and antialiasing and sharpening on almost all images.
I didn’t think AGS could handle HD?
That’s the only drawback for me.
Recently completed: Game of Thrones (decent), Tales from the borderlands (great!), Life is Strange (great!), Stasis (good), Annas Quest (great!); Broken Age (poor)
