My adventure gamming consisted of playing infocom which are fantastic. I also played magnetic scrolls. My recent games were myst and riven which I found to be very good.
I did like the atmosphere of the myst series and it would be that type of adventure that I like.
Any recommendations as to the huge selection of games out there? 
The Atlantis series is usually referred to as being “Myst-like” and is generally well-liked. Other than that there’s also the excellent Journeyman Project trilogy.
The Darkfall Series are Myst-like but darker and highly reccomended.
There are also Myst 3 and 4 of course that you should play (along with Uru, although this is slightly different).
I wouldn’t call the Atlantis series and thye Journeyman Project myst-like. The perspective is first-person, that’s all.
There are probably lots of Myst-like game lists floating around in cyberspace. Google is your friend. My personal favorites: Obsidian, Comer, Golden Gate. Worth a look: Celtica, Morpheus, Timelapse, Aura 1 + 2, Outcry (r). Spooky ones I enjoyed: Dark Fall (r), Amber, Rhiannon (r), Barrow Hill (r), Zork Nemesis.
(r) = recent. The rest is old or ancient.
