Point-and-click adventure game recommendations from the last 14 years or so?
Hi AdventureGamers forum! I’m sure this is a common question, but I’m looking for some adventure game recommendations. Especially the third person point-and-click genre, though I’d try other stuff too. I haven’t been into any new ones in quite a while pretty much. I tried The Longest Journey for example, didn’t get into it. Aside from TellTale’s Sam & Max stuff, that’s the newest traditional adventure game I’ve bought. And it was from 1999.
It does seem the genre went underground since then. What have I missed?
For the record, I really dig Space Quest, Quest For Glory, Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Full Throttle and stuff like that in the genre.
I’m looking for anything with some quirk or character to it especially, doesn’t have to be comedy, but in drama I like maybe noir style or something eccentric about the protagonist or the theme. I notice some adventure games seem a bit, well, too normal for me, and very earnest/serious, some can seem boring.
For more of my taste in other media, I dig you know Pulp Fiction, Vampire Hunter D, Sin City, Repo Man, The Crow, Cowboy Bebop, Anchorman, The Big Lebowski, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Max Payne, Metal Gear Solid, ha if that helps.
Also, on top of the official releases, I’m also interested in any particularly well done free games too. I did dig the recent Space Quest game Vohaul Strikes Back.
Thanks, so what’s cool folks?
I think you’d like Machinarium, and Botanicula which is even more quirky.

Thanks for the recommendations. Now, right off the bat it’s funny to say, but this might show more what I’m interested in. Just took a look and read a little on ‘em and looked at screens on MobyGames, and these games don’t really appeal to me. I’m sure they’re well made, but just not quite in my zone. Playing as a little plant creature or little robot, etc. I guess… I especially like a mix of quirk with a slightly “adult”, maybe subversive, maybe badass feel, ha I’m not sure what the adjectives are for the spectrum I’m interested in.
But, well, I guess a protagonist who’s an adult or at least an adult-ish teen is one prerequisite for what I’m looking for. Granted, this doesn’t rule out cool or fun adult-ish cyborgs or vampires or something. Or a hard boiled talking dog cop I guess. But thanks.
Also, general question, what are some good sites to browse for Adventure games? Any good places where say users rate them, or I can sort by number of votes or something? Like an adventure game IMDb?
Recommendations always welcome, thanks folks.
Oh, ok. I’ve got no idea then. The only other recent cartoony ones I can think of are Simon the Sorcerer 4 and 5. You’re a teenager but he’s kind of sadistic and does cruel things. The humor is a bit like Sam ‘n Max. But yeah, I think the type of game you’re looking for was more common in the 90s.
Oh, and Ceville. Maybe Jack Keane too, which is slightly more on the traditional side.
Jack Keane looks pretty fun, cool.
They don’t have to be cartoony, or even comedic necessarily. Could even be grim or violent if need be. Just with a bit more zazz than say The Longest Journey. Whatever zazz is, ha I dunno. It’s that certain something, whatever it is that I dig.
If the various particular little things I dig aren’t there, I’d still be happy to hear about ‘em. I really need to stock up on adventure games from these years, I’ve fallen off the adventure map.
Thanks, keep hitting me with recommendations folks, appreciated.
I can recommend the first two Broken Sword games from the mid-90’s. Lots of humor in them and a great cartoony drawing style, while it’s still a good mystery in each.
Buy yourself a 3DS and hunt down the Ace Attorney games + Ghost Trick. It’s what got me back into gaming.
Didn’t like TLJ either so I can relate. First thing I can say is stay away from Syberia.
You’re pretty much describing the Tex Murphy games, but they’re older so I assume you know those.
Did you check:
Salammbo
Moment of Silence
Next Life
Lost Horizon
Diamonds in the Rough
Runaway 3
Edit: I haven’t played it yet, but the freeware game Donna Avenger of Blood gets very high praise.
Space Quest
Simon the Sorcerer 4,5 and Everlight, perhaps. Kaptain Brawe is average, but fun enough indie title. Back to the Future if you’re into interactive movies.
Quest For Glory
wait for Mage’s Initiation and Quest For Infamy
Sam & Max
A Vampyre Story
Monkey Island
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure
Full Throttle
play Full Throttle again
with some quirk
Edna & Harvey, Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, The Book of Unwritten Tales
something eccentric about the protagonist
Deponia
well done free games too
Cirque De Zale, Permanent Daylight
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
Stay away from the Simon the Sorcerer 4 & 5 abominations! If you’re gonna play any Simon games, play the originals from ‘93-‘95!
If you like anime - Cowboy Bebop (awesome series by the way! ), Vampire Hunter D - then anime styled games such as Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk and Last Window may be right up your alley. Phoenix Wright has plenty of humour, but both Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk and Last Window have cool stories/mysteries to solve! Of course, you will need a Nintendo DS/3DS…
I also second Broken Sword!
I recommend Deponia and The Book of Unwritten Tales.

You found it!
AdventureGamers IS the IMDb of adventure games.
The user ratings are a new addition, so they’re not that expansive yet, but the recommendations from the site itself (“Top Reviewed” it’s called these days) are mostly on the money…

I agree with this. Some of the best games of the past years were DS releases.
The Phoenix Wright games are pure genius, especially the first and third installment. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and its sequel Last Window: The Secret of Cape West are also really good - especially if you like noir.
Time Hollow and 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors are also brilliant DS games!
For the PC, you can’t really go wrong with Lost Horizon. It’s very Indiana Jones in nature, and it’s a pretty good game.
Discworld Noir is also recommended (again: especially if you like noir).
And To the Moon is also a thing of beauty (but it’s very low on gameplay, be sure to gather info first!).
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
I love noir. Tex Murphy games, Discworld Noir and Grim Fandango are brilliant. Filled with wonderful humour and still they have complex, larger-than-life real adventures in them.
Close to that feeling is also the Gabriel Knight games. But none of these are very recent, everything from last millennium.
I personally don’t share the fondness to Lost Horizon. It had a lot of potential and the last chapter is really good, but the middle part of the game is horribly tedious. From the more recent titles I really enjoyed Dreamfall and Fahrenheit (which are not point&click;), Black Mirror trilogy (dark, kinda GKish), Culpa Innata (dystopian sci-fi), Memento Mori (mystery and mythology), Gray Matter (gothic horror in modern day) and the retro games from Wadjet-Eye: Blackwell series and Gemini Rue.
I could also second Next Life and The Moment of Silence. Edna & Harvey and Yoormujak’s Ring are on my list but I haven’t played them yet.
Currently Playing: Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
Recently Played: Red Embrace: Hollywood, Dorfromantik, Heirs & Graces, AI: The Somnium Files, PRICE, Frostpunk, The Shapeshifting Detective (CPT), Disco Elysium, Dream Daddy, Four Last Things, Jenny LeClue - Detectivu, The Signifier
Very cool, thanks for all the recommendations.
Lotta games to check out. I do have a DS and Ghost Trick etc, had never tried Phoenix Wright for some reason, so just ordered the first one, should be fun. Adventuring on the go, though I do prefer adventuring on bigger screens.
I’m familiar with the 90s ones, though I hadn’t played the first person FMV Tex Murphy games yet, they do interest me though. Think I’ll start with Overseer on GoG.
And many excellent looking point-and-click games listed, plenty to work with. Groovy.
I wouldn’t start with Overseer. It ends on a cliffhanger that wil hopefully be resolved in next year’s game and it’s generally considered the least of the big three.
For a good introduction start with Under A Killing Moon or else just play the best one, Pandora Directive.
how has nobody mentioned The Legend of Kyrandia?
one of the greatest point & click games ever conceived.
this game is sooo underrated. it does classic adventure perfectly!
