I found five Ellery Queen books on eBay and put in lowball bids, confidently expecting to be outbid on most of them. And I've ended up winning all of them. They're all bargains and none are duplicates, but I'm going to be in SO MUCH TROUBLE when they start arriving.

I'm forbidden to buy books, you see. This blanket ban doesn't actually prevent book-buying, but it usually keeps it to an acceptably low level. Five entering the house in a week might not be low enough. I'll have to claim them as my (early) birthday present.

To make matters worse, I've just blown a bundle on Amazon, too:

(Yes, I know this looks a bit like an Odd-One-Out puzzle, but never mind.)

I'm dead.

Why aren't you allowed to buy books Davies?

My recent splurge was a nice dinner in a restaurant in the city center.

I'm forbidden to buy books (and software) because if I wasn't, I'd buy WAY too many. As it is, with the ban in place, I only buy slightly too many.

Subliminal Learning arrived this morning! Wow, I only ordered it yesterday lunchtime! I'll have to give that guy some really good feedback.

(Luckily, Colin didn't notice it arriving in the post, so I think I got away with that one.)

By the way, I've just remembered that I've also got two computer games and a couple of CDs coming as well. And some craft materials. Hoo boy. At least I threw away the latest Bibliophile catalogue.

It's all part of being a Cancerian. Crab money management boils down to hoarding, interspersed with brief periods of splashing it about like mad. These past few weeks have been a "like mad" phase. It's over now, except for having the goodies arrive.

Wow, you could almost be MY wife with that view.

Sadly, due to my commute, she normally gets to the post before me. If something turns up on Saturday I've got her bang to rights though. I'm up WAY earlier than she is then.

So what's "Subliminal Ad-Ventures in Erotic Art" like then?

EDIT : OK Technically I'm up before my wife every day. On Saturday I'm still in the house when the post arrives.

I just came back from the city with all the books in the picture below. The two big books only have empty pages in them. I love them; I use them for writing in. The book by Saskia Noort I got for free with the Pratchett books.

Well, it's the only book by Wilson Bryan Key that I don't own. He's the author of books on subliminals in advertising and so on, all of which I can recommend: Subliminal Seduction, Media Sexploitation, The Clam-Plate Orgy, and The Age of Manipulation. (If possible, they should be read in that order, as he begins with a very narrow argument and opens it out further and further in later books.)

In The Clam-Plate Orgy he includes a chapter on subliminal imagery in classic works of art, and Subliminal Ad-Ventures is an expansion on that. He makes some very persuasive arguments.

(I note that Wikipedia says this book is the same as The Clam-Plate Orgy, but I don't think it is, as he refers to it there as a separate work.)

A quick overview of subliminals in art can be found here: http://www.subliminalworld.org/artatk.htm

I hope my Visa Electron works in Amazon or I'll go crazy.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness - PS2
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - GC
Penumbra Overture: Episode 1 - PC

Thinking about taking the double dip for Scratches: Directors Cut but I'm still clocking in time on the original Scratches so... not sure yet.

Pooh. It IS the same as The Clam-Plate Orgy. I'll have to sell this one on now.

I've just ordered about £100 worth of subliminal CDs, but most of them are for Colin (healing and pain relief) so that doesn't count as much of a splurge. The two I ordered for myself are creativity and exercise motivation.

Last Saturday I bought the Neverending Story on DVD for 3 euros. I'm watching it now. What a horrible movie. Cheesiness galore! Worse, even. Now I just have to read the book again to get my mind in order.

Today I bought two external harddrives that I will use for making backups. I used to make backups on rewritable DVD's but that became too much of a hassle when the amount of data I had to backup became much larger than 4.5 GB.
