Review of The Quarry by shanethewolf

Amazing retro horror experience, despite some flaws

I’ll come right out of the gate and say I loved The Quarry. It is oozing with atmosphere and was a great nostalgia trip for the 80s horror fan in me.

Yes, it’s a bit silly, many of the characters are obnoxious and the writing and dialogue is plain ridiculous in places, but that’s what makes it authentic and is all part of its charm. At least to some of us, though I can understand how this could be interpreted more negatively by newcomers to the genre.

On the downside, there were a number of characters I disliked so much I willingly killed off or allowed to die, which defeats the purpose of a survival horror game I guess. But then I had fun doing it and leaves me with a good reason to go back and play again.

I should also point out that this is not really a game. There aren’t any puzzles to solve, no action sequences to play through and very little interaction overall. It’s more of an interactive movie and the role of the “player” is reduced to quicktime events and occasional dialogue or decision choices.

This makes it difficult to compare to other adventure titles, like comparing a movie to a game. But as an overall experience, I loved every minute of my 8 hour play time.
