Ron Gilbert to Return to Monkey Island this year

There have been three new Monkey Island games since 1991's LeChuck's Revenge, but among the most diehard fans of Ron Gilbert's classic series, there's always been a sense that the sequels that followed were not canon, and that the only real sequel could come from Gilbert himself. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but what is no longer in doubt is that Gilbert is indeed revisiting his beloved franchise with a brand new installment later this year called – appropriately – Return to Monkey Island.

Gilbert originally teased fans about the possibility of a new game with a sly April Fool's joke promising precisely that. Turns out the joke was pretending it was fake, as Gilbert is teaming up once again with Dave Grossman on an original new story that "picks up where Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge left off," according to a tweet by publisher Devolver Digital.

The first teaser suggests we can expect a gorgeous hand-painted adventure, with music by Michael Land, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian, and Dominic Armato reprising his role as the voice of Guybrush Threepwood. No further story details have been unveiled just yet, even on the official website, but stay tuned to Adventure Gamers for much more in the coming days and weeks as we begin the agonizing wait for the game's release sometime later this year.
