As an ensign on a starship in the distant future, you find yourself mopping decks instead of going on the adventures you were promised when you signed up. Before you can put into action your plans to go AWOL, there are explosions on the ship and you find yourself on an escape pod heading for a nearby unknown planet.

Sound familiar? I don’t know how much Space Quest took from Planetfall (my guess is somewhere between “more than a little” and “a LOT”), but the similarities don’t end there - both rely strongly on humor and lots of ways to die. There’s also a cute little robot companion named Floyd. I must admit I only played a little of the game a long time ago, so I can’t say whether it holds up today.

It’s a little while since I played it, but not that long. This is a great game and well worth playing to the end - it’s towards the easier end of the Infocom canon, and worth playing for Floyd alone.
