Broken Age Act 2 Discussion
I liked the rope and wire puzzles, and they only gave me some pause. The only puzzle I continue to really not like was the last nav scarf.
I thought the rope puzzle the very worst in adventure game history….....then came the wires puzzle and I changed my mind….....
Anyway, the day will come when I replay part 1 again…...it did get a better metacritic rating than part 2 - no wonder in my book…......
I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.
I had zero problem with the rope puzzle. I understand there may have been a glitch that affected certain players, which is a separate issue from puzzle design, but beyond that it seemed like a pretty straightforward puzzle, not even one of the more difficult ones in the game.
I enjoyed all puzzles, rope puzzle was fun to figure out, wire puzzles were logical, totally fine with me.
Overall i feel reviewers are a bit too hard on act two, we got more than we could hope for, especiallly with the documentary bonus. I would be interested in some insights into why the developers made some decision regarding story, puzzles, etc. maybe a directors cut will come out some day?
Max: Right! We’ll travel through this dimensional portal on the top of the bar!
Sam: That’s spilled beer, rockhead.
Max: Oh in that case ...
In terms of story, I think the documentary explains it quite well. Tim seemed to struggle writing act 2 and after playing act 2, it shows. I think I have to agree with Rock, Paper Shotgun on this really. Started strong in act 1, but act 2 fell over then dragged itself over the finish line.
Recently completed: Game of Thrones (decent), Tales from the borderlands (great!), Life is Strange (great!), Stasis (good), Annas Quest (great!); Broken Age (poor)
i really liked act 2, but id still agree its clear that the story feels like it was a struggle.
I have to say that I really don’t like this game. I usually like 3rd person point and click games, but, this game is such a disappointment for me. In fact, I think I can’t get past it. I’ve looked at walkthroughs but this last wiring puzzle doesn’t do anything. I have tried and tried and nothing is working and there is no schematic for the drum puzzle. I wanted to love this game but for me it is a huge disappointment.
Haven’t played Act 2 yet (arrrgh!!!), but from what I’m reading this is a testament to a developer needing to stick to its guns and sometimes do what they think is best. I didn’t find Act 1 to be too easy, as a lot of vocal players did. Apparently DF listened to the feedback and made Act 2 a lot tougher and puzzle-heavy… And of course everyone’s complaining even more than they did before I mean people on this forum that are critical are being really nice about it, you should see the hate this gets in other parts of the internet (actually, no, you really shouldn’t see it, some people just love being assholes for the sake of it).
Judging just by Act 1 alone, in my book it’s still the prettiest and most atmospheric and visually refined adventure to come out in recent years.

I’m just going to have too look for those comments on the internet - I bet they are a riot to read.
Anyway - what’s done is done. Overall, double fine did a great job and I’m sure they will listen to the comments they got on part 2 for their next game.

I agree. Do you guys think there will be a Broken Age 2?

HEY! - Some of us actually appreciate that they upped the difficulty a bit - OH! You are talking about other people and not everyone in the strict meaning of the word
Anyway, I don’t really think the act2 is that more difficult than act1. Sure the last chapter can be a bit tricky, but I would still only describe act2 as normal or medium difficulty, and I think that it is a quite normal progression of difficulty in games. You always start a bit easy and then gradually increase the difficulty and end on a high note with the most difficult puzzle - Perfectly normal.

As I mentioned earlier, then the wiring puzzles can be very difficult if you don’t fully understand how they work, but if you do understand everything then it is actually fairly easy. They are also randomized so you can’t just look up the solution in a walkthrough, but you can find an explanation of how it works at the bottom of this guide.
As for the drum, then yes, there is no schematic, BUT Shay can get the exact solution
from Vela, and Vela can either get it by trial & error following some pretty obvious clues, OR she can get Mom to wire up the robot, and then simply examine the robot afterwards.
Edit:
Do you guys think there will be a Broken Age 2?
Nope!

I can’t see it either. 3 million on act 1 alone after all. Though, it did end like a “coming up next”.

This is the thing with gamers. You make a game easy and lots of people complain how easy it is. You make it hard and lots of people complain how difficult it is. Sometimes I feel that you just can’t win as a game developer.
I don’t complain about games being too easy
My main complaint with adventure games is usually just bad puzzles with illogical puzzles.

I actually liked the wiring puzzle and the rope puzzle but with the caveat that I didn’t like the fact that the wiring puzzle worked by using information from Vela’s playthrough to be able to solve it when playing Shay. This kind of broke the fourth wall and the suspension of disbelief…
My main gripe about act 2 is the story. I really liked the story of Act 1 and I feel that the second act’s story doesn’t do it justice. It falls flat…
In the end it’s a lovely game graphically that could have been great but the story ultimately disappoints a bit.
