Write a sentence that is present in almost every adventure game

Well, I don’t usually start threads here, but I thought I could start this one just for some fun.

We all know adventure games are full of chiclés, so the goal here is to write something that appears in every adventure game worthy of that name.

I wiil start with the easiest one:

“It’s locked.”

“It’s locked.”

Indeed.

Although from my experience, the most common exact phrase is “The door is locked”, and there are some variations of that, like the one that you wrote.

That also inspired me to make that the catch phrase of the site AdventureDoor.net.

I suppose very few people follow that site, and I can’t blame them because there haven’t been any updates in 2021 for instance…  Crazy (yes, there will be few before the year ends…) but those few that do might have noticed that the actual game reviews always end up with a screenshot of that phrase, or the most similar phrase to that in the reviewed game.

A small collection of screenshots from few random adventure reviews:

(And this can be also a small quiz! How many games do you recognise? You can check which game/review they are from by checking the file name of those images.)

“That doesn’t work!”
The lazy game designer’s favourite line. Although I still quote “Nope, those don’t work together” in Tim Curry’s voice from time to time, he made even the most primitive and cliched things sound classy.

There’s so many similar sentences but the only ones I could think of now is “I can’t do that yet” & “Try something else”.  Smile

GateKeeper, I think I recognised 7 out of the 10 screenshots you posted.

I think I recognize about four or five at first glance. I like the concept!

Here’s a text parser classic that’s going to sound familiar to our 80s AG and IF aficionados:

“Sorry, I don’t recognize that verb.”

“You can’t use that with that” is a standard inventory pairing response. Usually voiced with a sarcastic lilt that says, “Why would you even thin that would work.”

Another one:

“I need to distract him/her”

The most common has to be some variation of “I can’t do that.”

The best version of which being the Sam and Max one:

They are!

This may not technically count as a sentence, but it’s a familiar string of words. One that comes with a dose of nostalgic despair for fans of the Sierra classics:

“Restore, Restart, Quit”

“Something is missing here” is a staple.

“Game Over” - thankfully not in most of the games I’ve played!

Loved it. I didn’t know you can travel without Max and get new responses from Sam.

There’s always something broken in adventure games, and you get responces like “This machine is broken (beyond repair/maybe I can fix it/I need to find a spare part)”. There are also plenty of vending machines/payphones, and since the characters are always penniless, they “need a coin” to use them (which is often found in the coin return slot anyway).
