Text Adventure Playthrough #9: Slouching Towards Bedlam
So who kicked the door in and when? Not Brand, he had access to the key. Hmmm…
I didn’t think of that. But don’t forget the staircase was also described as “rickety”. Sometimes a rickety door is just a rickety door.

Ok, that description does look more like someone kicked it down before us.
PS: The driver said something about “dancing with the Green Fairy” many pages back. I looked it up, it’s absinthe. LOL
I needed that to lighten the mood, after that morbid story about Cleve..
Shall I give a summary of the stuff I found about the Order of the Golden Dawn and it’s relation to Kabbalah, Yeats and ciphers? I’d hate to barrage you with even more text, but it might be interesting.
Please do! If it’s too long post links.

The Order was a secret mystical society. Yeats had a keen interest in the occult and joined the organisation at some point in his life. Ciphers play an important role in the esoteric teachings of the Order.
“The Ciphers contain the outlines of a series of graded rituals and the syllabus for a course of instruction in Qabalah and Hermetic magic, including Astrology, occult tarot, Geomancy and Alchemy.”
“The Cipher Manuscripts are the original source upon which the rituals and the knowledge lectures of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn were based.”
The Tree of Life

Interesting. I haven’t seen that before. But I hope you’re not expecting it will help us solve the puzzle box.
It’s one of the thousands of images of the Tree of Life on the www.
I wanted to know what all those words in the writing on the wall meant.

So poor Cleve was trying to save us from being infected by not talking.
Which explains why our own speech infected everyone we met. The infection takes a week to take effect, after which the triage no longer recognizes you as human, but gives an error instead.
So the purpose of the game will be to find a way to stop the infection?
Or is the only way to succeed in the game to restart and throw ourself out the window *before* infecting James and anyone else?
PS: I’m certain the terms dissociative disorder and cognitive dissonance were not used in 1885.
I’m pretty sure that our triage, and that archival retrieval system didn’t exist in 1885 either. So it’s safe to say this is an alternate universe.
As for the puzzle box, can the triage help?
> point at puzzle box
> point at engraving
> point at Kether
And if that last one gives a result, point at Binah, Chokmah, Gevurah, Chesed, Hod, Tipareth, Netzach, Yesod and Malkuth
It does seem like Star Foster and Daniel Ravipinto did their research for this game.

Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka

Ooooh! That’s very clever of you! We should definitely try that.
Unless it’s the corona-type and you can infect other people even though you don’t any have symptoms yet.

Yes. Steampunk. Mix of modern technology and historical settings. Like in Varicella, one of my top twenty text adventures.
As for the puzzle box, can the triage help?
If you’ve read the previous pages you know how to solve the-not-much-of-a-puzzle without triage’s help.

Triage’s beam flickers over the puzzle box, briefly, then displays:
CAT:NONLIVING.TO
OL.UTIL:STORAGE.
PART:COMPLEX.MEC
ANISM.DETECTED.E
NGRAVING+WRITING
=KABBALAH?TREEOF
LIFE/YGGDRASIL?B
UTTONS=SEPHIROTH
The mechanism clatters for a moment, making connections, then…
SEPHIROTH+KABBAL
AH+MACHINE=CYPHE
RIST.!.POSSIBLE.
CONNECTION.CYPHE
R=“MALKUTH.IS.IN
KETHER”-SOLUTION
=MALKUTH,KETHER,
KETHER,MALKUTH?!
>point at engraving
A small beam of green light lashes out over the engraving of a tree as Triage’s screen lights up:
CAT:UNKNOWN/UNLI
STED.UTIL:NOT.AP
PLICABLE.PART:NO
NE.ITEM.IS.NOT.R
ECOGNIZED.BY.CUR
RENT.SYSTEM.STOR
E.REQUIRE.ADDITI
ONAL.INFORMATION
>point at Kether
Triage’s emerald searches Kether, then…
CAT:UNKNOWN/UNLI
STED.UTIL:NOT.AP
PLICABLE.PART:NO
NE.ITEM.IS.NOT.R
ECOGNIZED.BY.CUR
RENT.SYSTEM.STOR
E.REQUIRE.ADDITI
ONAL.INFORMATION

Right… we already knew the solution.
The only useful thing Triage has done so far, deciphering the writing on the wall.
The game doesn’t seem to like puzzles. I’m disappointed we didn’t even need the key to enter Cleve’s flat.

Is triage just a big clumsy hint producing machine?
If you’ve read the previous pages you know how to solve the-not-much-of-a-puzzle without triage’s help.
I had to go back a bit for a reminder of the terms…
I mainly remembered the translation “Man is in God as God is in Man”...
SEPHIROTH+KABBAL
AH+MACHINE=CYPHE
RIST.!.POSSIBLE.
CONNECTION.CYPHE
R=“MALKUTH.IS.IN
KETHER”-SOLUTION
=MALKUTH,KETHER,
KETHER,MALKUTH?!
Well, that’s just blurting out the solution, no?
> push malkuth
> push kether
> push kether
