What game have you just finished?
There’s The X-Files: The Deserter (2004) (J2ME), a game made for cellphones which can also be played in an emulator if need be. It’s made by some of the same people who made The Moment of Silence. It plays like an early 90s adventure game; first person and inventory puzzles with a verb bar. It’s a short, simple game. Here are a couple screenshots:
This looks interesting, especially with the The Moment of Silence connection. I will seek it out.
Another is an old text adventure called Xenos (1982) (TRS-80). I have a copy but I’ve never played it. I don’t know if it’s good, but considering its age it probably doesn’t hold up well.
...snip…
I’m not really into VNs myself, but there are a bunch of X games in that sub-genre as well, though not all are in English. They tend to be X games in the pornographic sense also.
Your knowledge is a little bit intimidating. Thanks for putting this together, D!
X is a pretty grim letter for adventure(ish) games, so good luck if you’re committed to that. Of course, if you are only doing this for one year it’s pretty easy. Start doing it every year and it gets more challenging…
Just this year for me. Next year, since this is working so well, I was thinking of something similar but with relaxed constraints. Instead of playing a game starting with each letter of the alphabet, I will play a game that contains a word starting with each letter of the alphabet. So… for X I am thinking of Companions of Xanth.
I only have 4 letters left (O, Q, T, Z) in my personal quest for this year.
I am about half-way done with the letters and I’ve already played more adventure games and, more importantly, had more fun with them than in the last couple of years combined.
I’m also trying to play at least one game from every year between 1976 and the present (only 7 years left) to celebrate every year I’ve been playing video games.
Respect!
Night in the Woods. Loved it. GOTY so far.

You must be a world record title holder for the largest number of games played, D! What motivates you the most? I can make myself to play only a few AGs/year. I’m really not sure why I’ve lost interest for playing games. Maybe all that episodic crap has something to do with it.
Oh, I’ll have to go look for that. Loved the X-Files so this game should be perfect for me.
I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.
Just finished Agatha Christie’s The ABC murders.
Very polished graphics, fine voice acting, decent story (obviously) and the seeds of a very good game.
Unfortunately, the execution of the puzzles was poor (though, again, some good ideas there) which is a real shame as they dominate the gameplay and are pretty, pretty bad.
Might be worth a play-through for fans of casual games.
I finished The Franz Kafka Game. Very short and ultimately disappointing. I liked quite a few of the puzzles but the story had very little substance. I’m not sure I would even classify it as a proper game, more of a short diversion.
I just completed SOMA. Wow, what a great game. Intelligent and thought provoking storyline, and involving gameplay. I loved it!
I’ve just finished Culpa Innata. A truly unlinear game that, despite its defects, fascinated me, with a well written story (yet unfinished), an intringuing future society and an adult treatment (in the uncensored version at least). It’s going to be a huge challenge to translate it, but it worths it.
Currently translating Strangeland into Spanish. Wish me luck, or send me money to my Paypal haha
I just finished Fran Bow, a very strange little horror adventure.

the controls of it had ruined the experience for me, it was worse than The Moment of Silence

You get used to them eventually. I think you should give it another try

Just finished The Next Big Thing and enjoyed it a lot. I wasn’t fond of Runaway and quit playing Hollywood Monsters. So I was kind of surprised that Pendulo produced such a nice adventure. Looking forward to playing Yesterday.
Sometimes, when I clean the rooms, I get a little curious and… erm… you know… snoop through our guests’s stuff. - This Bed We Made
I recently completed What Remains of Edith Finch. I would say that if Gone Home is more than the sum of its parts, this is less. There are some spectacular and highly emotional set pieces, and it’s as tight as an interactive narrative experience can be. It just doesn’t quite pay off in the end. Games like this (2 hours game time with linear gameplay and no puzzles) need to be perfect in concept and this one didn’t quite get there.
Shardlight was the last adventure game I finished.
It is not bad, but I came into it directly from Kathy Rain, and that is a tough act to follow.
Anyway, it is well worth the time it takes to finish and the world is quite interesting. Would not mind to play a sequel!
Adventuring since 1986
In the last week, I finished Overclocked, A New Beginning, and EcoQuest 1. I had gotten close to the endings of the first two and had parked them, waiting for spare time to finish them.
Overclocked was a fun interactive-movie-ish kind of thing (can’t call it a game really - too linear and very very light on the puzzles). I enjoyed the questions it tackled, even if it was a tad clumsy. The gradual deterioration of the mental state of the main character was well handled. The sense of desperation towards the end - when all alone and on the run - was palpable.
A New Beginning. Pros: a long meaty game with some cool set-piece puzzles. Interesting sci-fi story. Cons: preachy (even though I agree with the message). Con that makes all other pros & cons irrelevant: the WORST localization of any game I’ve had the misfortune of playing. This thing was a chore. In hindsight, I should have switched to German voices and kept the English subs
EcoQuest: The Search for Cetus: took me just under three hours to finish this cute little edutainment gem. Clearly targeted towards children but fun for the whole family.
