Simon the Sorcerer 25th anniversary edition
I’ve just noticed on gog that there will be a 25th anniversary edition of Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2.
Did you guys knew about this ? That’s the first I’ve heard of it, which is surprising considering how much I like these games.
And anybody know what the “improvements” will be exactly ?
Found some info on the Steam page:
- Totally new, much praised, game play controls that were built from the ground up.
* Hotspot based - no more pixel hunting!
* All-new slick icons and animations.
* Quick actions using right-click.
- Completely new game menus and save/load system.
- A stunning new HD graphic mode that upscales the game beautifully to high-resolutions.
- Optional retro settings: play with original graphics, original music and even the original controls
Out 3rd of April! I’m defo getting this; thank you for the heads-up.

I’m very anxious about the new “HD graphic” thing. Could be great, or could be Monkey Island Special Edition
Also, I wonder how new “game play controls” can possibly be much praised…
And wasn’t right-clicking already a think in Simon 1 ?
So all in all, this news is both exciting and scary to me.
Any talk of “upscaling” means they are just running the old graphics through a filter. So basically, it won’t be HD in any meaningful sense.

So like the scummvm filters ?
I use those a lot, but I wouldn’t go so far as call them “stunning new HD graphic modes”

The HD graphic style was “not good”, although it looks like the screenshots linked in that thread have all been taken down.
Now Playing: Harold Halibut, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake Remastered, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Recently Completed: Another Crab’s Treasure, Botany Manor, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Silent Hill: The Short Message
Anticipating: Beyond Good and Evil 2
Backing: Asylum. Broken Sword: Reforged CE
Sounds good

Ugh. I remember the conversations about the mangling of the soundtrack. Hopefully they’ll have done things a bit better this time.
I’m not hopeful, though. Looking at the screenshots on the GOG page, it looks like it’s just a quick filter job. The lack of aspect ratio correction is awful and makes the graphics look all squished. And you’ve got to love how the one thing they added (the new main menu) looks completely out of place in the game. I mean, would it have been so hard to try to emulate the game’s style for ONE screen?...
Anyway, I replayed Simon 1 a year ago (with ScummVM and munt), and it is perfectly fine as-is (except the save/load menu, which kinda sucks, but it’s not like you’re using it every 5 seconds). I’ll definitely be skipping this anniversary edition.
Hey, maybe the 30th anniversary edition will be better!
Curiously I planned to play Simon the Sorcerer this year, and I intend to play it with the ScummVM version. I like the charm it has.
Currently translating Strangeland into Spanish. Wish me luck, or send me money to my Paypal haha

So, a graphic filtering that ScummVM already did pretty well, and some new ugly save game menu. Ouch.
I had a look at Simon 2 25th anniversary screenshots, and it looks to me more of the same.
Which is a shame because I would really have liked a revamp of the interface, which was pretty bad in the sequel IMO.
By the way, I still would like to know what this means : “Totally new, much praised, game play controls that were built from the ground up.”

You’re totally right. The screenshots don’t look good and are, in my opinion, a downgrade from the original. Even the new icons look cheap. The first two Simon the Sorcerer games are wonderful and genre classics. The series deserves more love than this.
Apply dogshit filter, save, publish, sell.
Sorry, but that’s a slap in the face of the superb original pixel art.
Sure, you can still buy it and play with the original art, but calling this an HD version is ridiculous.
By the way:
I remember seeing that art before. I don’t know if the maker of it posted it here or if it was somewhere else, but I think they might have had a working prototype done already. They didn’t end up getting funding to make the game though.
But it’s been a while, so my memory is a bit hazy about that.
All this made me want to buy the older versions, which I just did since they’re currently on sale for almost nothing at GOG, as well as a bunch of other great AGs (Sierra, Zork, BS, etc.).
And I have Simon 1’s music dancing in my head ever since I read Kurufinwe’s post about the new score.
Ninth, whenever I play Simon 1, I click on the M button to mute the music. It drove me crazy! But, what fun games. I have played Simon 1 many many times - upwards probably of close to 100 times. seriously. If I am in a bad or melancholy mood, I will play the game.
