Wormventures: Barrier 51 to be turned into a full-scale commercial adventure

Way back in 2007, Looky – The Adventure, a point-and-click game about a worm on a mission to save his planet, was first published as freeware. Now solo German developer Marcus Röckendorf of Basement Society plans to release a greatly expanded and overhauled commercial version of the game entitled Wormventures: Barrier 51.

On Vermis, a planet inhabited by intelligent worms, a scientist has discovered that a long-extinct volcano called Mount Spit “may not be quite as dead as assumed.” Someone will need to investigate more closely, and Looky is the worm selected by the elders to travel to the island of Residenco Volcano, which is also rumoured to be colonized by cannibals. Before long Looky finds himself swept up in an “epic journey full of danger” as he attempts to “unravel the mysteries of a volcano that isn't one, a gone-nuts public enemy and the 'Barrier 51!'”

Visually Wormventures utilizes a chunky and colourful 3D style, but control will be handled via a similar point-and click-interface to the original game. There will be over 60 locations to visit, ranging from big cities to underground tunnels to misty mountain tops, and more than 40 characters to meet in your travels. Looky himself remains a bright pink worm with big eyes and an occasional grin as he slinks along like the invertebrate he is. He has no arms, but he does sports a rucksack in which he can hold an inventory of objects collected along the way. Players can expect a mixture of comedy and danger from a story that promises to reveal “dark military secrets and unbelievable conspiracies” along the way.

A release date for Wormventures: Barrier 51 is not yet set, but a demo is currently in the works and you can already add the game to your wishlist on Steam. In the meantime, you can still download the original free title from itch.io for Windows PC.
