Personal Rocket set to take off later this year

Conspiracy theories are everywhere these days, and most of them are total bunk. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you, right? Telling fact from fiction will be a key component of indie developer Orbis Tertius Games' upcoming retro-styled adventure, Personal Rocket.

Up until six months ago, Cole Fisher was a computer engineer working for Cosmic X, a business "devoted to the betterment of the human race, the pursuit of world peace and eventual space conquest." But Cole was abruptly fired when he uncovered that the company was really "trying to take over the world." Ever since his dismissal, Cole has been "holed up in his apartment hacking his way through endless labyrinthine connections, gathering as much data as he can to expose the biggest conspiracy in human history." Then he has a "surreal vision, a religious experience, a close encounter, call it what you like," in which an elven-shaped "Mysterious Messenger" informs Cole that it's up to him to "bring down Cosmic X once and for all."

Presented in a simple retro pixel art style, Personal Rocket tells a story about "paranoia and loneliness, the evils of capitalism and too much web surfing, the material world and the occult universe. Your typical postmodern blues." Players will guide Cole through a variety of side-scrolling environments as he seeks a way to blow up the tower headquarters of the "evil corporation" he used to work for. Sounds like a classic adventure game save-the-world scenario, except this one comes with a major question mark for the protagonist: Is he right about Cosmic X, or is he actually just losing his mind?

There is no firm launch date for Personal Rocket just yet, but the game is set to be launched on Steam for Windows PC sometime before the end of this year. That leaves plenty of time for anyone who missed it to check out the developer's other game released this year, the even-more-retro-styled Imaginaria, a slice-of-life adventure about a single night's watch at a remote facility in Antarctica.
