Localized version of Firework explodes onto Windows PC

When we consider Asian horror we may instinctively think of Japanese movies and games like The Ring, The Grudge, Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but the Chinese have their fair share of folklore-inspired horror stories as well. The latest ghost story out of China is Shiying Studio's Firework, which has just been localized into English and released for Windows PC.

In 2004, a young woman killed two members of her family before hanging herself in a case that was closed before all the unanswered questions had been resolved. Some time later, a rookie officer named Lin Lixun arrives in the "isolated mountain town of Qingtan ... to investigate a coffin bursting into flames at a funeral." Lin is no ordinary policeman, however, as he possesses "the rare gift of being able to communicate with the dead." As Lin, players will begin to search for evidence into the cause of the fire but will quickly find themselves entangled in a "far bigger mystery and the sinister forces behind it." With the help of Lin's unique ability, you must now "unravel cryptic conversations and solve supernatural puzzles left behind by the dead" to determine if it was really a "supernatural phenomenon or an elaborate murder."

Firework is a side-scrolling adventure with a distinctive visual style inspired by watercolour paintings and "pan-Asian horror stories, culture and folklore," along with the designer's own childhood memories of growing up in the eighties. The seamless combination of various "elements and conventions to create a dark and oppressive atmosphere" is intended to elicit "a sense of creeping dread and fear rather than relying on jump scares as players unravel the horrifying tale." There will be plenty of other characters to meet and interact with as you progress, each of them important in their own way as you "get to know them, understand them, and share their joys and sorrows." But as with any good horror story, not everything is as it seems, and just when you think you're on the verge of discovering the truth, "suddenly the mist will blur everything again."

Released earlier this year but only in Simplified Chinese, Firework has now been fully localized into English and is available to download on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store for Windows PC.
