Inspector Waffles to pop back up in prequel

Adventure games looking back at the start of detectives' careers is all the rage these days, from Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One to Hercule Poirot: The First Cases. While not quite as famed or accomplished as his human colleagues, feline investigator Inspector Waffles will be the next in line to get the prequel treatment in Goloso Games' upcoming Early Days.

The first game hinted at a case from Waffles' past that went horribly wrong. Early Days will provide much more insight into this event, which revolves around the young detective, his partner Pancakes and the villainous Snowball. Players will once again assume the role of the titular anthropomorphic cat protagonist, this time a much younger version in his "first days as an inspector" as he attempts to solve a variety of small cases in order to "prove to everyone that [he is] more than just a rookie."

As with its predecessor, Early Days features a simple pixel art aesthetic. This time, however, in keeping with its focus on years gone by, the game will be presented with a less detailed visual style and more of an overhead view, controlled via keyboard on gamepad. This is intended to mimic the look of old handheld devices such as the Game Boy Color, which the finished game will support, along with PC and modern consoles as well.

It's much too early for a target release date yet, but the developer is aiming to complete Inspector Waffles: Early Days sometime in 2023.
