Provenance: Room 226 to begin in December

Waking up in a strange hotel room is scary enough even when it just means you partied a bit too hard the night before. When that room turns out to be in a whole other reality, you've got much bigger problems. That's the rather shocking dilemma facing the protagonist of Provenance: Room 226, the upcoming debut title from solo developer Steve Coyle.

Vincent Spade's young life has been a quiet one, working as a scientist for the Stadler Corporation. Today, though, the curiosity that drew him to science has led him to discover a dark secret, one with the occult power to make him black out and wake up in a weird hotel suite. Although nondescript at first glance, it's soon clear that the room exists in another, far more hostile reality, similar to our own but dangerously different. Vincent desperately needs to discover what's going on, find a way out, and make it home before this place kills him, or drives him insane.

Inspired by both atmospheric horror games (such as Layers of Fear and Silent Hill) and the Sierra adventures of his youth, Provenance promises a creepy experience filled with  "challenging" puzzles to solve, including inventory-based tasks, codebreaking, and (naturally) a variety of locks to crack. The developer's background in art and design for larger studios such as Ubisoft really shows through in the trailer, which presents a range of realistic 3D environments in and around the titular hotel room.

Provenance: Room 226 is due to be unleashed on Steam in December for Windows PC. In the meantime, you can follow the game's progress on the official website.
