Planet of Lana preparing to take off in late 2022

Imagine, for a moment, a perfect world: maybe somewhere lush, green, and tranquil, with none of the stress that marks modern life. Then imagine all that being taken away in an instant as objects of devastation fall from the sky. What would you do? That's the challenge posed by Planet of Lana, the upcoming debut adventure from Swedish indie Wishfully Studios.

Lana and her faithful "animal companion" Mui live in just such a utopia, on an alien planet where humans and animals have coexisted peacefully for hundreds of years. As the story begins, though, their bucolic existence is shattered by the arrival of a robot army, with hundreds upon hundreds of mechanical soldiers descending all around them. Now they must embark on a perilous journey together to save Lana's sister, their world, and their very way of life.

Planet of Lana's tale of friendship and courage looks and sounds delightful, with the painterly charm and orchestral sweep of a Studio Ghibli film. Through a mix of hand-drawn artwork, parallax layers and careful use of 3D, the developers are aiming to create a side-scrolling "interactive painting" for players to explore, via a mix of platforming, puzzling, and stealth sequences. Lana and Mui will also be able to team up, using their abilities together to create "unique gameplay and story moments." Despite promising an "epic story that stretches across galaxies and centuries," the focus isn't on war and fighting, but instead on relationships, and how even the smallest creatures can make a difference.

Planet of Lana will be landing in 2022 for PC on Steam as well as current and next-gen Xbox platforms. To explore further in the meantime, you can check out the game's official website.
