HMH Interactive declared insolvent in Germany

We've grown accustomed to Germany being the hotbed of the adventure genre in recent years, but today's alarming news shows that economic cracks are beginning to form even there. As previously announced on the German game site Adventure-Treff, a report published (also in German) on GamesMarkt reveals that HMH Interactive has today declared itself "insolvent".

According to the report, disappointing financial results in the past year, particularly the third quarter, forced the move by the publisher of the acclaimed Book of Unwritten Tales and Deck13's upcoming adventure, Haunted. The small Hamburg-based company also cited high development costs and increased sales and marketing expenses as factors in their troubles.

It remains to be seen what the future of HMH holds, however, as it's unknown at this time if an insolvency plan can still salvage the company. Requests to the publisher for comment were not immediately returned. The news also raised potential doubt about the planned English language releases of HMH's Treasure Island and Book of Unwritten Tales, but The Adventure Company has confirmed that both games will still be released as planned in the coming months.
