Two previews of Silver Earring

Holmes' latest adventure, Case of the Silver Earring, is up for previews at GamersEurope and RPGDot.

By far the strongest aspect of The Silver Earring is its understanding of the characters and the world they inhabit. Rather than attempting to bring anything up to date or to throw a “clever” spanner in the works, Frogwares has concentrated on creating a mystery that is fitting of Sherlock Holmes – this is very reminiscent of the acclaimed TV series starring Jeremy Brett and would fit in right alongside such tales as The Hound of Baskerville. This is most impressive when you consider the medium of gaming, rather than the author having full control over what Holmes knows and what he will know, you are free to carry out your own investigation and the order of how you collect the information does have an effect. In any one area you could be interviewing ten or more people, all the time gathering clues and seeking out evidence. Yes, sometimes it can seem a bit too obvious that the killer left a certain item you would expect him to have at a certain location, but without this it’s just not Holmes.

Frogwares tried to recreate the London of the Victorian era. Quite successfully, as you can see in the screenshots. The graphics are full of details. You can ramp up the resolution to 1600*1200 without notable performance impact. Only the character animations fall behind the rest of the production - they could be a bit more fluid, but this is no big issue.

Instead of composing a new sound track the developer licensed classic tunes by Paganini, Mendelssohn, Schuman and Dvorak. The voice actors talk in a slightly snobby British accent, which sounded really good to me.

We remind everyone to tune in to AG on August 16, when we'll start Sherlock Holmes week. Also, make sure to get the demo.
