In 1986, a friend showed me all the wonderful stuff he could do on his brand-new Atari ST 1040, including a game with a little guy walking across screens.* At one point he fell into the ocean and was in danger of drowning. Oops! What now? My friend told me to type the word “swim”. Lo and behold!... King Graham started swimming. That was magic for me. Pure magic. I just had to have an Atari ST of my own. And that’s how it started.

*The external diskdrive would make loud screeching and whizzing sounds for 5-10 seconds before a new screen appeared.

That story is very similar to mine, Karlok. Wink I was so impressed about the same comp Atari 1040 ST which was owned by my cousin. Next year I’ve bought Atari from him.(ok my dad did) My favourite game was Montezuma’s Revenge but when I come across to some Adventure Games like King Quest I was hooked for life!

The most frustrating thing at that comp was a loading time. You had to wait 10+ minutes to play a game, and if you were lucky enough there was an error just when game should start, ouch!

39 here. I started playing adventure games in 1993 when I was 17 at the time, so my start was with SCUMM games. Unfortunately, I missed out on the early text adventures and the early Sierra games.

HA! I’ll be 68 in a couple of weeks. I believe rtrooney is the same age. LadyKestrel is over 60. There must be others. No Gauss. Tongue

Right there, and proud of it!  Thumbs Up

Who’s the voter under 16, that’s what I want to know. Youth has the future!

The spread is much better now and I agree, the young one needs to come out of hiding Smile

This vintage was decanted in 1959! My first gaming experiences were the Zork text adventures on my dad’s TRS-80. I now own around 400+ adventure games, and I’ve never been into any other genre. (Although I did play Unreal Tournament for a while…got sucked into it by fellow employees at work.)

In a couple of years, you’ll have to add a 70+ category, Advie.  I’ll be 68 in April.

Well, that’s, you, Karlok and me who have reached the magic number. Only difference is you two turn 68 this year. I turn 69 in October. So Advie might have to add that 70+ category a year earlier than you suggest.

Unlike many others, I didn’t start playing games until I was 51, nomadsoul, but I’m just a big kid at heart anyway.

I played KQ1 on an 8088 back in 1983. The media was 5.25” disks, and there was some stupid form of copy protection that annoyed the hell out of me. I had an 8” RGB monitor. I was 36 at the time, but I can’t consider myself a late starter because there weren’t very many, if any, true graphical adventures available before then.

Another thought: 1983, March 11th to be exact, is when I met Sue. Three years later on March 11, 1986 we got married on Kauai.

So 1983 is when I played my first adventure game, and met my wife to be. On March 11, 2016 we celebrate our 30-year anniversary. And I’m still playing a game or two.
