Adventure Game Scene of the Day - Tuesday, 9 February
Evil Days of Luckless John is a very interesting title - even if it does ultimately fail at the overwhelming odds of putting many genres together in a gripping experience, but as far as adventure is concerned (and this is 90% pure adventure game) it does have few bright ideas and quite original puzzles. Bigger trouble than the occasional driving, shooting, stealth sequences… cumbersome controls and the game-stopping bugs, is the fact that the progress is made only over the series of episodes which are strictly tied to a certain location. There’s little freedom, and it goes against the main genre-mixing premise (things get better only a bit, once you get to the city in the second half of the game). Still, the Grim Fandango-esque way of exploration, original comic-like atmosphere of the 20s New York (John goes against the mafia to save the casino he inherited!) could make for an enjoyable few hours.
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
Hard to tell whether you like the game, or consider it to be so seriously flawed as to be unplayable.
For whom the games toll,
they toll for thee.
