5.25 inch disks

Hello
I have just purchased through Amazon marketplace an old sierra game. Looking on the box on the screen and information on the site suggested it was on 3.5 disks. But when the game arrived it was on 5.25 inch disks.
Does anyone know how I can convert 5.25 disks to DVD or even 3.5 inch disks.
Thank you

why would you convert such a trophy , when you can hang it next to your diploma.
but anyways you cant unless on an old machine, but you can download it (if its available) from gog and be able to play it.

You can simply just copy them, if you find a 5.25 drive somewhere. They’re pretty rare nowdays and finding one that is compatible with modern hardware might be a task. Though I’m sure someone somewhere has made an USB compatibile floppy drive.

You can get 3.5” usb floppy drives, but i’ve never seen one for 5 1/4.

I haven’t seen one either. And besides, even if there’d be an USB device like that, it would propably be cheaper in the end just to buy the games digitally again. Same thing with services that transfer floppies to CD’s. It’s just not worth it.

Plus if the game’s on that size floppies it must be old enough that there’s a significant risk the media will have deteriorated in the meantime. If it’s a game that is available digitally for a reasonable price(and I think if it’s a Sierra one that is quite likely?), you’re probably best off keeping the physical version as a souvenir and having a fresh digital copy you can actually play.

I agree with tomimt and Phlebas. 5 1/4 floppies are ancient, and finding a drive is going to be a lot more work and will cost a lot more than simply getting the game from GOG (if it’s on there).

There are no usb 5.25” drives out there. What is more if you buy an old 5.25” drive (readily available in Europe and the US at least) you’d need to find an old PC, certainly a 386, possibly a 486 would work, as you’d need a motherboard controller compatible for that sort of drive plus a parallel (or was it serial? can’t remember now) port. I did have a PC with one fitted but that went in a clear out of old kit a couple of years ago.
As others have said, buy the game on GOG if available but I’d also think about contacting Amazon with regard to misrepresentation by the seller.

Original 5.25 inch disk adventure games are very collectable. I read about people who collect them - sometimes paying quite a bit for them. The value of the game is in the condition - box, manual and disk labels.

Sadly, both 3.5 and 5.25 disks have short lifespans - usually around 5 years for 5.25 and 10 years tops for 3.5 inch disks.

I wish I still had some of my 5.25 disk adventure games - they are worth $$$$ now.

Sorry Mike but this simply is not true. I’ve copied Word Perfect from original 5.25” discs onto hard drives and 3.5” discs. Those originals were about 10 years old if not older. Also, I’ve installed original Microsoft Office 4.2 Professional (1994 vintage release) onto a PC about 5 years ago and completed the installation with very little fuss. That was 23 3.5” discs. Certainly life span wasn’t eternal but it could be far better than you say.

If you keep the floppies away from magnets, and they don’t get damaged, then I don’t see a reason why the data shouldn’t last up to 20 years.

Thanks Guys for your input.
The game is Code-Name Iceman and is not available on Gog. I will communicate with amazon
to see if anything can be done. Otherwise I will put them in my collection.
Thanks

I believe the original game was a dual media release.

The box should have contained both the 3.5” and 5 1/4 floppies.

If you can’t return it to Amazon, maybe ask at vogons.org.
Lots of people there play games on vintage hardware.
Someone might be willing to transfer the files for you (assuming the disks are still good).
