Games that look like the original Myst
Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis, and Zork Grand Inquisitor are probably what you are looking for if you want surreal first person pre-rendered puzzle adventures that aren’t shoehorned into a genre.
Also possibly Sierra’s Light House.

The two Schizm games excel at being pretty surreal.
An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.
Roberta Williams
Blue Ice is the epitome of surrealism.
Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale
Rhem is a very good choice too:

I enjoy playing adventure games on my Alienware M17 r4 and my Nintendo Switch OLED.
Chaos: A Fantasy Adventure Game

Comer

(I had trouble getting this one to play using anything later than DirectX 6)
Liath

(pretty graphics, terrible gameplay IMO—very linear)
Obsidian

(really great IMO—no idea why it only got a 3 star review here)
It had a Community Playthrough not long ago

Entombed

Labyrinth of Time

Updated for newer systems by Wyrmkeep http://www.wyrmkeep.com/labyrinth/
but the graphics are still “pre-Myst.” Sound is a lot better though.
And the Physicus/Bioscopia/Chemicus trio of “edutainment” type games had sort of surreal environments

The following were supposedly back in time, but had unreal-seeming places too…

(Could use a few more screenshots for this one)
Journeyman Project 2 and 3

I’m sure there are some others, but this is what I’m remembering so far.
I liked Zork: GI. Return to Zork has the retro graphics I like, but I hated the gameplay and dead-ends. I will try Nemesis. And maybe Lighthouse.
Schizm looks cool and I might try it, but it is really colorful and alien-like. I am kind of looking for relatively normal things put together in an unusual arrangement… if that makes sense.
I like Rhem’s simple graphics, I will try it maybe.
Thanks for list, crabapple, I will look through these. I just played Obsidian, it was great. The Journeyman games are great too. Some of them like Comer look like what I’m looking for.
A couple of other possibilities…
Celtica

Lighthouse: The Dark Being

Wait…people actually WANT to play Myst clones? I had always been under the impression that most Myst clones were generally hated within the adventure gaming community.

There were a glut of poorly made Myst clones. But there are some gems. I’ve always enjoyed Zork Nemesis myself, which was trying so hard to be Myst. Not many others though, unless there were really quirky like the other two Zorks.

Yeah, and Germans have no sense of humor, in Britain it always rains and French women armpits… ah, nevermind.

But I like Myst clones… It’s the Myst games I don’t like.
Sentinel: Descendants in Time is one that fits op’s request for non-homogeneous surreality, and it’s not as difficult as some.

Warning- People won’t have as much of a sense of humor about you putting an Alka Seltzer in your mouth then staggering into a restaurant while shouting “THE VIRUS HAS MUTATED!” as you’d hope they would.
Consider this: People say “Ewwww!!!” when they hear about a guy having a hairy bum or hairy back, yet every Teddy Bear ever made has had both a hairy bum AND a hairy back and nobody complains about them; In fact, people think Teddy Bears are adorable.
Firstly thanks to some of the members for some great that I didn’t even know about, I’ve found this resource also useful in my travels for similar games: http://gameslikefinder.com/games-like-myst/
Just wanted to put my vote in for Return to Zork, Rhem, Reah, Celtica and Chaos. Might not appeal to everyone but those are very much my to 5 in terms of being original Myst like.

Going off the subject here, I though it was German women who notoriously didn’t shave their armpits?

I second this game. It was interesting and challenging….. without your brains exploding with frustration.
