Games you wish were remade

People here also share their opinions, and I’m afraid this is how most fans of the series would react in case someone decides to remake Gabriel Knight 2 and 3 as 2D hand-drawn games. They were originally conceived as a FMV and a 3D game, receptively, switching to 2D means changing the whole concept. While I’m not a fan of the second game (but a great fan of the third one), I agree that the developers made hell lot of a work filming it, unlike most other FMV works, there’s a touch of individuality, people still visit Germany for a Gabriel Knight tour - there are lots of comparative photos and videos online.

Yeah but still, I literally said I am not sure for one, and then I said probably animation. It’s my opinion, which I was unsure of in the first place. People should be mature enough not to attack a person for not feeling the same way as they do.

But you’re now attacking people for not sharing your opinion which is extremely hypocritical.
You’ve offered your take/view on the subject and that is all well and good and is perfectly valid. However, others do not agree with that view and have said why in a perfectly reasonable way whereupon you got on your high horse basically saying that your opinion is the only one that has value and therefore shouldn’t be criticised.

To keep a balance in all this I read elsewhere that English is not native to you (as it isn’t to many here), although I freely say you have a pretty good grasp on it, and your reaction is due to possibly a slight misunderstanding of the other views proffered.

I don’t believe I attacked anyone, and I don’t know how you’d end up with that conclusion. I felt attacked for having my opinion, I never, not once critiqued anyone else’s opinion. That’s the difference. I said people should be mature enough to have different opinions and respect them. And I pointed out my opinion wasn’t even solid for me, in the first place. I’m uncertain of what I’d like.

Same here. I have a very strong opinion about GK2 and FMV, but I did not mean to attack you. I’m sorry you felt that way.

Yep, I don’t and I’m uncertain of my opinion, which is why I felt my opinion attacked for writing down my current thoughts on the remake that weren’t solid in the first place. Peace Smile

It was easy to reach that conclusion when you state:

You seem to want it both ways. You can express your opinion (no matter how strongly/unsure about it you are) but others are apparently attacking you and are immature for expressing their opinions which disagree with yours.

By all means voice your opinion, as it’s what these forums are here for, but allow others to do the same and enter into discourse where these views differ - keeping an open mind of course. It’s how people grow intellectually and, in this case, may help you to fully formulate what your thoughts, desires and wishes are regarding any possible remake of GK2 that you raised here.

Nope. Not at all. Please read my messages again. I’m not gonna waste any more time on this subject. As I said, I have my opinion, you have yours and that should be fine. I respect others opinions and I expect the same. I’m 35 years old, and terminally ill I really don’t wanna waste my time with nonsense like this. My points were that people should be able to accept differing opinions, as do I. And shouldn’t feel the need to attack other opinions.  You’re assuming way too much. I said I felt my opinion was under attack. Which it was. Which is fine. Which is why I replied we should be able to accept and respect differing opinions instead of attacking them. Which I never did btw. And that we should keep peace. But you don’t seem to want that. Discussing about differing opinions is one thing, arguing and making rude remarks about someone’s opinion completely another. That’s where the maturity comment comes in.

I forgot what this forum was like.

I’ll stick around for another stuff but opinions… Not from me.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Dean Erickson, he always came out as the worst actor in the game. He did look the part, but besides that, he didn’t really have the chops for the kind of a role Gabriel is.

That said, if there ever was a remake of the game, I’d rather see it done with the original FMV, but in better quality. The problem with that probably is that the original recordings have been lost ages ago. Oh well, maybe in not so distant future the neural network upscaling gets so good, that we can have realistically upscaled versions made from 90s FMV games.

I think Myst is due for a remake. Just call it: Myst. That way it is easy to tell apart from the others. And really the original is so old now, surely no one will mistake it for that antiquated slideshow.
If that falls through, it’d be great to see a remake of King’s Quest I.
But only if they drop the roman numeral.

On a serious note, if something has to be remade, I think it would be better to remake ugly 3d games. And if you have to mess with 2D games, just remaster them, CoMI in HD for example. Just don’t slap a filter on there and call it a day (Looking at you Simon).

That said, I would enjoy Riven and Myst III in VR.

I agree, but let’s not limit it to that. It’s understandable that people would want the most popular, classic games to be remade, which is what most of the suggestions have been so far. But did Monkey Island and Gabriel Knight really need a remake? Did Grim Fandango need one? Those games were and are still perfect, and if there were any improvements (I don’t believe there were), they were minor.

I would prefer to focus on more obscure, almost unknown games with great concepts which never got a chance because of one or two enjoyment-killing flaws, and therefore almost no one got to play. There are plenty of these.

B.A.T 1 & 2 (bad interface, frustrating moments)
Adventures of Robin Hood (terrible graphics and interface, save system with only one slot to encourage players to role-play with Robin)
KGB (in-game timer, could use a rewrite)
Psychic Detective (could never understand what the hell was going on in this game)
Countdown (removing the timer would make it more accessible, but perhaps less exciting. Maybe some QTEs instead?)
Curse of Enchantia (bad interface)
Orion Burger (time limit)
Omicron Conspiracy (frustrating inventory limit and action sequences)
The Morlov Affair (poorly acted, bad interface)

Others I’ve never played but want to:
Congo: Descent Into Zinj
City of Lost Children (never played, but I’ve heard it’s bad)

I didn’t like the “improved” graphics in Monkey Island, or Gabriel Knight. But I do like that I can now play MI 1 and 2 on my 386 fully voice acted. It’s the kind of thing that makes you chuckle when you hear and see it the first time.

That’s an interesting idea. Not a 1 to 1 remake, but an overhaul/remake.

TBH I think they could just get new actors to do it instead. Telling Lies was a good example of how FMV isn’t quite dead, so why not? Idk.

The reason why there was never such on occasion in the history of gaming, is that it’s pointless - if some company decides to hire completely new actors for a project, they would make brand new game, not a remake. Dean Ericsson was cool - an average 90s FMV game actor, he didn’t overact, he did not shine but it was cool for a game purpose. And still is.

Recently finished: Four Last Things 4/5, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout 5/5, Chains of Satinav 3,95/5, A Vampyre Story 88, Sam Peters 3/5, Broken Sword 1 4,5/5, Broken Sword 2 4,3/5, Broken Sword 3 85, Broken Sword 5 81, Gray Matter 4/5\nCurrently playing: Broken Sword 4, Keepsake (Let\‘s Play), Callahan\‘s Crosstime Saloon (post-Community Playthrough)\nLooking forward to: A Playwright’s Tale

That’s exactly my thought, he did the job & didn’t outshine the game play mechanics & plot. Possibly other players were disappointed that he didn’t quite match up to Tim Curry’s portrayal of a bad-ass via his wonderful voice-acting?.....but wouldn’t that be more down to the script?
