Kickstarter watch thread
holy cow, i heard about the ouya last week, an android based console with an emphasis on open development (free dev kits)... well today i realized a kickstarter for it already started and smashed straight through its goal:

I can’t see developers wanting to make games for this thing. Where is the profit if all games are free to play unless there are a lot of microtransaction games.
PLus the invitiation to all hackers and open source is just going to make this platform Pirate and Emulation central.
An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

^important to note, they do say that “free to play” can mean just providing a free demo for games and charging for the full game, which really opens up the possibilities.

Free 2 play pretty much means a game funded through microtransactions. It’s an interesting model. Instead of everyone paying $60 up front, everyone can play for free and the people with the money to spend on goodies and upgrades can and will spend it. The Free 2 Play developers call those people ‘whales’.
My question is… what happens when the whales go extinct? BOOM BOOM
I mean, you can only ever have a handful of games that the whales will beach themselves at. There’s going to be a lot of companies that go bust with this model. I’d say even more so than the regular indie developers who try to get their game on Steam and the App Store.
Free to Play, is much more expensive then a actual retail game. Example is that one people can buy the game for $25 and maybe a DLC will appear worth $15, total game is worth $40. Developers will only get their money back if the game sell.
But a free to play game microtransactions can lead a single paying $100 just to get a weapon to +10/fully upgraded and that is just a single person.
Everyone takes a road less traveled, not knowing all will lead to the path

The Ouya team should never have called Ouya a FTP platform, since they also allow games on the console where you can play a demo and then pay to unlock the rest of the game.

The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Not a real Kickstarter campaign, but too funny not to post here:

Zero Point Software has just launched their game Interstellar Marines: Prologue on Kickstarter.
Despite the name it seems very interesting, mixing elements of Deus Ex, Half-Life and System Shock 2 in the single-player mode, and the above + tactical co-op 2-4 players in the multiplayer mode a la the Rainbow Six series (IIRC, the hole story portion of the game can be completed in co-op). As the name hints, the game is the prologue story leading up to the main trilogy.
IM has been in development for several years, so there are prototypes to watch/play on the developers site/Youtube.

Peter Molyneux and his new company 22Cans - which includes some of his colleagues from Bullfrog and/or Lionhead - has launched a Kickstarter for a new god simulator. It sounds pretty interesting!
Just a quick quote:
“GODUS blends the power, growth and scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White.”

Rock Paper Shotgun has a very intense interview with Peter Molyneux, in which he says some amazing stuff (“At this rate, the way I’m burning through my life, I don’t see that I’ll be alive much longer.”) and is brought to tears…

Rob Florence has written great post on his blog on how People like Molyneux with enough clout in the industry are spoiling kickstarter by exploiting consumers with microtransactions benefit, when they can do funding themselves.
