Probably the release I’m looking forward to the most this year. The original is a top 3 game for me. Got a little bit worried when I heard they will add and revise stuff though, and not use the original FMV:s for example. I had hoped for the exact same game but in a modern 3D engine, a la the first realMyst releases.

While I am hyped for this game, this was not a particularly interesting trailer. I mean, how long do we need to see aimless lever pulling? I get that it’s a core part of these games, but there is a lot more eye candy in Riven than we are seeing here. Kind of a disappointing trailer.

Though, I am very excited about a remake.

The trailer just demonstrates what kind of gameplay one should expect from this game I guess) I’m glad they pulled this off, Riven always looked gorgeous — I was so absorbed with its beautiful world back in 1997 that I stopped paying attention to the gameplay, why I got stuck in it forever and never finished. It would be wonderful if they managed to recreate this universe in full 3D without changing anything.

I thought it was ok. There was a strange kind of ambience to the original Riven in even the ordinary lever-pulling moments that I think a more exciting trailer would pass over.

According to GOG the Riven remake will release tomorrow. Watched the first minutes of the game on youtube yesterday and it looks great, but as I feared they have replaced the full motion videos with cgi characters/3D models. Hope this was out of necessity, since I would have much preferred the original movies. The 3D models do look a bit better than in Myst 2021, but that’s not saying much.

I’m on the fence right now. I watched watched someone play the demo for 5 minutes. The new Atrus in the intro made me cringe. Terrible. But I am curious about the extra puzzles and other stuff they added.

Why bother, how many minutes actors screen time anyway,5 min?

Gehn’s speech alone is 7-8 minutes long. My guess is more than 30 minutes if the player wants to see every ending.

It’s an interesting paradox. Here in 2024 we can do high resolution animated character models and prefer them over low resolution “real life” actors.

Me? Give me the actors any day of the week.

Doesn’t really matter how much/little screen time there is. After the original FMVs in the most recent version of Myst were reintroduced through a patch, the game still feels a bit broken because of the 1-2 minutes with the mandatory 3D Atrus at the very end of the game. They should have renamed him Atrocious.

Even the smallest encounters with NPCs are so important for the “feel” of Riven. The original FMVs worked great and you can tell a lot of work went into the production to get them right. It’s a pity Cyan can’t or doesn’t want to use them is all I’m saying. The 3D models I’ve seen so far look borderline silly, or cringe as Karlok puts it.
