Questions About the Return of Shadowgate

I’ve never heard of Shadowgate, but it looks interesting. Seems odd that they’d rearrange and reuse plot devices though. Seems more like a rehash rather than a new game, or am I misunderstanding something?

It’s more or less an “update” of the original game. Many of the game screens are quite similar to originals, albeit with enhanced graphics. They’re adding some puzzles and content but for the most part keeping much of the original Shadowgate intact.

Pretty similar to what they’re doing with Leisure Suit Larry actually.

Well, generally speaking, most of these projects raise about 35-50% of their total money in the first week, and like 20-25% in the first day. So this is a little behind the curve, but if it holds steady for a few days, they’ll be on target.

If you can make it over 2/3 by the halfway point, you’re generally golden.

According to KickTraq here:

KickTraq on Shadowgate KickStarter

The first 24 hours earned $24,448 from 801 backers, which is just above 20%!  Currently (as of typing this), its at $29,979, just shy of 25%!  (Correction, before finishing this post, we just surpassed 25%!)  And that’s with me sleeping in today ‘cause it’s Saturday!  Wow!

These numbers sound pretty good to me.  I’d say we’re more around the lines of “On the Curve or Ahead of It”.  Smile

Thanks for sharing those percentages!  I’ll keep those in mind to help gauge how the campaign’s doing.  Smile

I…wasn’t implying this at all and am not sure where you got that from my post. Bigger means bigger, not biggest.

Percentage wise, it’s good to raise about 25% in the first day to feel “safe”.

Whoops!  My bad.  I didn’t mean to imply you were speaking ill or negatively of the campaign or anything.  I guess it just triggered something in my head that made me want to discuss some of the observations I’ve made and share thoughts about KickStarter creator attitudes.

Sorry about that.  I didn’t mean to put you on the spot.

Although if 25% is “Safe”, then I guess that includes the Shadowgate campaign!  Smile  We just topped $30K!

But I’m not about to sit on my thumbs and be content with that.  I want to see how far we can get before end of Day 2!

Oh, and if you haven’t already, we’ve been posting lots of stuff on our FaceBook page here:

http://www.facebook.com/zojoigame

Feel free to give us a “Like” if you want.  It’ll help you keep track of where we’re at, know when new Updates / Articles / Specials / and more happen.

Am I shamelessly promoting our Facebook page here?  Yeah, I am.  Guilty as charged.

But I might as well be honest about it.  Smile

It’s more or less an “update” of the original game. Many of the game screens are quite similar to originals, albeit with enhanced graphics. They’re adding some puzzles and content but for the most part keeping much of the original Shadowgate intact.

The term we’re using for this version of Shadowgate is “Re-Imagining”.  Rock, Paper, Shotgun mentioned us in their most recent “KickStarter Katchup”, and quoted what Dave wrote for our KickStarter page which I think puts it best:

It’s a re-imagining that includes a lot of new features, exciting updates and ingenious additions that will add even more to the mythology and expand upon the original story of our fantasy classic. This is the Shadowgate that we always wanted to make and we are thrilled that we have the opportunity to capture the unique excitement of the original while expanding on the world and mythos like never before.

Even though I’m helping with spreading the word and telling people about the game and the campaign, only Dave, Karl, and the rest of the dev team know the specifics about what’s gonna be in the final product.  I’m going to be just as surprised as you guys by the new features once it comes out!  Smile

Shadowgate in a comparison with Leisure Suit Larry…

...I don’t know why, but something about that gives me the chills.  *BRRR*

By my estimations this is doing really well. Lets compare with another recent kickstarter that got around 20% in its first day, but looks to be struggling: the qfg successor.  They both are having a similar rate of growth in exposure and backer gains, but the shadowgate goal is much lower. Also a much higher % of people for shadowgate are jumping on the cheap tier, and while that might sound like a bad thing, i take it as a sign that its getting a lot more people who are unfamiliar with the game to take the leap of faith… which will result in more people continuing to hear about the project. The QFG-ish campaign has shown enough signs of life to possibly make it in the long run… but i think the outlook here is quite a bit more optimistic. Very different, despite them both getting about the same % in the first day.

No worries, Cymbaline. I just wanted to clarify that I myself wasn’t being negative. I think the campaign is off to a great start!

I think it more or less had 25% on the nose in the first ~24 hours, so that’s solid.

To be perfectly honest, I haven’t been following the status of many other KickStarters lately since I’ve been focusing primarily on Shadowgate.  Once we hit the goal and when all’s said and done, I’ll likely take a step back, look at the campaigns that I may have missed or didn’t have time to really keep an eye on, and study them to see how Shadowgate did in comparison to them, what we and others did right, what we and others could do better, and learn from it all.

It will come in handy when the next game project is ready to hit the crowd-funding front

Oh, and if you didn’t catch the announcement on the KS page, Zojoi Facebook, or our Twitter, we just posted our first Update.

This is our composer, Rich Douglas, going over the sound design for Shadowgate.

What might really catch your eye is the sneak peek into one of the more notorious rooms of Castle Shadowgate:

The Dragon’s Lair!

Nice article/interview at Polygon.

Thank you!  You should read the part that came before that one!  Smile

Shadowgate remake hits Kickstarter, adds new rooms, graphics and music to original adventure

Also, a rather exciting update that Dave surprised even me with!

The Black Axe!

To unlock this puzzle/item/quest that was cut due to size constraints back in 1987… it will require…

1,000 Likes on Facebook

Zojoi’s Facebook Page

That isn’t too much to ask for, is it?

Things have been pretty quiet in this thread lately.  Oh well, at least I have a new update to share!

Digital Tier Addition!

Looks like the $30 Tier has been upgraded to include a digital copy of the Cloth Map that will be included with the physical copies of the game, plus a set of desktop calendar wallpapers (With or without the actual months on there).

Also, following up on the Black Axe, Dave commented on the KS page that the 1,000 Likes was a promotional idea he wanted to do for fun, but plans on putting the Black Axe content into the new game no matter what!

This should be good!  Grin

Articles on Ars Technica, Polygon, Destructoid, Gamasutra, and others have been popping up all over today!  Wonder if Adventure Gamers is gonna see about getting in on the news?

You say “get in on” like it’s a privilege to announce that yet another developer is asking for money. Wink

I’ve known about this all along, but I don’t see AG news as a puppet fundraising vehicle. Frankly, it’s my first inclination to ignore all new Kickstarters unless it’s a major new game announcement OR if a campaign is really struggling and needs the help. So far a Shadowgate remake is neither.

It’ll be news if it reaches its goal. Until then it’s just an idea with a request for money attached. I plan to stay out of it until if/when the campaign starts to show signs of trouble.

Of course, if the developers really wanted us to cover it, they could always try contacting us personally.

Ugh… Did I really say “Get In On”?  That just sounds so douchey!

You… you don’t think Shadowgate is a major new game announcement?  That hurts.  Frown

But it also means that you think we’re doing well!  Smile

Wait, you mean you didn’t get the press release that was sent out?  I could have sworn Adventure Gamers was on the list of news outlets we sent it out too.  If not, I’ll make sure to fix that.
