Is voice acting in an adventure game mandatory?
Poll: Would you purchase / play a new adventure game if it lacked voice acting? Total Votes: 29 |

---|---|
I would definitely play it, but not pay for it | 2 |
I wouldn’t mind paying for it (assuming of course the price is reasonable) | 18 |
I’d be hesitant, but might be willing to try it if it’s really good | 9 |
No voice acting? Propostrous! NEVAH!!! | 0 |
Hi there! First topic and i decided it should be a poll! Hopefully you guys (and gals) are willing to participate.
I’m basically trying to ...tune…my expectations
Some games dont need to use it
I love my opinions when in vocal minority, asking out loud
ThimbleweedPark is one of the case benefiting from it
Though some games in rare cases like KZ0 could be stellar without it

I can’t wait to try out Thimbleweed Park myself. A little bit of old school X-files meets LucasArts vibe is quite welcome

Yeah
Dont know about Xfiles
But TwinPeaks=TP in the name of the game is probably lynchian reference
and those 2 chickenmen

Haha i in turn quite missed TwinPeaks and figured the characters were so much like the main (FBI) characters of X-Files. You’re probably quite right though.
Ah well…Still awesome
Absolutely not necessary.
No, it’s not necessary. It’s nice to have, but I grew up with speechless games (and for some games, like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, I’m so used to playing them without speech, that playing the voiced version is just weird - it doesn’t help that Indy doesn’t sound like Harrison Ford at all), and most of the great DS games have little to no voice acting either (except maybe in cutscenes)...
Heck, I just finished Machinarium and that doesn’t have any voice acting either. They circumvented the whole speech thing beautifully.
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
It’s nice to have it (even though I tend to click through dialogues as soon as I’ve read the subtitles) and it adds atmosphere to the game (see Last Express for a great example) but I would still buy a game without voice acting.
The thing is, I know I played some games without voice acting but I can’t even remember which games didn’t have it off the top of my head, so it must really not be a very important aspect for me
Where are the options for
Don’t care one way or the other
and
Better no voice acting than bad voice acting
Do you read books or must they have voice acting too?

Lol well I do read books and games without voice acting are no problem for me. But the poll is intended to see what the general concensus is on this topic (nowadays).

In the scope of the poll i think “Don’t care one way or the other” is equal to “I wouldn’t mind paying for it”
And if i’d add options like “better no voice acting than bad voice acting” i’d have to add way more options :-D. I get what you’re saying though.
Do you read books or must they have voice acting too?
Audiobooks of Metro and Lovecraft add alot more
And Watchmen motion comic was way better experience
Just like game music, sound is sometimes 50% of experience
Remove voice from GF and you have lost all the flavor
Recent Zelda trailer also proves that if its done right, it can do wonders

Why don’t we stick to the topic, hmm? And by ‘we’ I mean you.

Reading books have to do with Voice acting topic
hmmm
For me the voice acting is just as important as the graphics - and I don’t play text adventures
It however also depends on what kind of game it is. If there is no voice acting because there is no dialogue at all, like a first person exploration game, then it’s perfectly fine, though those kind of games are not my favourite genre.
BUT a dialogue heavy game without voice acting?!?
Then it really has to excel in other areas before I’m interested.
You have to play the game, to find out why you are playing the game! - eXistenZ
