Need advice to run Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon on XP
Just acquired Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon after being a long time Spider Robinson fan, and an email from the designer Josh Mandel directed me here for help. I have installed the game seemingly with no problem, but when I click play, everything disappears back to desktop. I am a little weak on software, and am hoping someone can advise how to make a Win 95 game run on XP. I have tried Compatibility setting on the CCS.exe files, as well as a few other desperate measures. I assume that part of the problem is that the game runs from the cdrom with no shortcuts et cetera.
I am sure that as soon as the solution is in front of me, I’ll be smacking my forehead, and emitting a string of #$%8.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Have you tried running it with DosBox?
You can download DosBox here: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1
Here are instructions for setting up Callahan’s: http://sharetext.org/Q7gy
^ What fov said.
DosBox worked like a charm for me.
If you get the game up and running, you should check the version of the game. There was a patch that took care of some freezing issues that people experienced, and it incorporated some other minor improvements as well. You can find the patch here.
Also, we held a community playthrough of the game on these very forums early last year (and designer Josh Mandel and main programmer Jim Montanus even chimed in). The playthrough thread could be an interesting companion piece for when you’re working your way through the game…
You can find the playthrough thread here.
Have fun, it’s an awesome game!

Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Almost.
mounted c: for install location and e: for cdrom.
dosbox opens, reads game, then get message “can’t open file .\RESTART.SAV”
Or should I not have installed game prior to running dosbox?
Thanks for assistance
Is this a legal copy of the game (e.g. not downloaded from an abandonware site?) I’m assuming it is since you mentioned the CD-ROM, but just checking.
It’s been so long since I played this I can’t remember how I did it, but the instructions I linked to make it sound like you should install the game using DosBox, rather than installing first.

^ This.
