Interrogation: A noire conversational puzzle game

Hi!

I’m Marius and I’d like to show you something we’ve been working on for quite some time now.

We’re a small indie studio from Bucharest and our first game is called Interrogation. In it you are the lead detective that brings down a mysterious terrorist organization: The Liberation Front. To do so you use a complex conversational simulation system to interrogate and psychologically manipulate realistic suspects in a noir game about political radicalization and authority abuse.

We want players to feel the difficulty associated with making a criminal crack under pressure, the tension of knowing people would die if you don’t understand well what can sway the suspects in-front of you, the moral dilemmas that come with the job and the mind-boggling complexity of managing the expectations of politicians, superiors, the press and the population towards a special police unit. We want players to feel the rush of finding a crack in a terrorist’s facade, the relief felt when narrowly saving innocents, together the desire to mull over the relevant critiques brought forth towards today’s society, even by some madmen.

Here’s a Steam link if you want to wishlist it or see more pretty pictures: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1016770/Interrogation/

And here’s the trailer:

The Story

Rich or poor, progressive or conservative, women or men, the Liberation Front’s potent lure fills its ranks with people from all layers and corners of society. They want to violently dismantle social order as we know it and to rebuild it from the ground up.

You are being assigned a special police department and a handful of other
skilled detectives to deal with the issue.

Along the way you discover more and more agents of the LF. You interrogate terrorists and regular people alike. Each has their own story, their own secrets, their own motivations. What will you do to find out the truth? Where will you draw the line?

The art

We’re going for noir, gritty, immersive and atmospheric. And since we’re trying to create believable, complex characters, we decided we wanted a realist art style where we rotoscope over pictures of actors. Here’s an example of one of our character animations:

Slowly pour 200g corn flour, 1 tbs salt into 1L boiling water in a cast iron skillet. Mix vigorously until it boils again. Keep mixing for 3-5 mins, then cover and let it simmer for 15 mins. Mix it a bit, then let it cool down and set. Serve with cream and cheese or sarmale. Treat your annoying relatives to tuica, so at least you get a good laugh out of them getting drunk at the family table, if nothing else.

I’m not sure where game development fits into all this, but I’m sure you can make gameplay out of misguided family dinner conversations.

Now, wouldn’t that be a cool game.

Interrogation looks good, with an intriguing game mechanism and atmospheric graphics. I’m wishlising it and looking forward to its release later this year.
