Upcoming adventure games you’re REALLY excited about
Doesn’t quite fit anywhere but for those that haven’t noticed; currently Steam Next fest going on. Lots of demos to try.
What do you mean, Pyoro-2? We have a whole demo thread here, on this very first page, that I try to add to a few times a month! It started exactly because we had too many demos to discuss from the game festivals, so we made a separate place for it. Feel free to add demos that impressed you (or didn’t) there.

LittleRose, give me a few examples of what you’re looking for. Otherwise, I just got Tartarus Key which is pretty awesome (demo on Steam) , or The Invincible or Lapso (those are more “atmospheric horror” and walking sim-ish though) that could be promising. And have you tried Chasing Static? Great game.
Inklingwood – good to know! I will give it a try this weekend. It sure looks great; I can tell you that much.
Jdawg 445 – great thoughts on the intricacies of writing/voicing a proper dialogue. This (seemingly less significant than plot/puzzle) element can easily bring game down to “meh” level. Especially voice done wrong. I’d rather have no voiceover at all.
Also, I never thought of it like this, but I suppose you’re right – we usually remember characters, not the puzzles, even though puzzle element is, basically, a foundation of game mechanics and what we engage with the most when we play, arguably. I do think that I remember the overall difficulty/moon logic level/volume of puzzles though. But, yes, rarely, a singular one.

yeah I don’t mean puzzles are not important bc they are, as I’ve been pointing out in another thread. puzzles are what makes an adventure game an adventure game. But the main character needs to be done right too, because that’s who the player spends 8 to 12 hours with and if the player does not like the main character then it is easy to put the game down.

Yes, but Steam NXT isn’t a specific demo; it was meant to be a general head’s up, so to speak, nothing specific
The only demo out of the current bunch that’s “adventure game…ish” I played is Between Horizons. It seems very good, but it’s more a mystery/investigative game than a classic point&click;. That being said it’s been on my wishlist for ages anyway so it just confirms that it is indeed interesting (some improvements to be made until release for sure though).

Have you played Lacuna from the same dev? and if so how was it compared to Lacuna?

Unfortunately not, so can’t compare I’d sum the demo up like this:
a) visuals are impressive, though the pixel characters stand out quite a bit now (you might or might not enjoy that)
b) controls are kinda clunky. But it’s still in development so improvements can and are made.
c) Narrative seems quite interesting and the main draw. There was a lot of reading in that demo.
d) Puzzle, I don’t know. The systems seemed interesting but see b) ; and dunno if there’s much else or if all gameplay will be like that.
Apparently they decided that there are going to be enough changes that they pulled the demo and there’ll be a new one before release? I guess that’ll show whether development went into the right direction
I tried Between Horizons and it wasn’t my thing, but then again - neither was Lacuna (or the demo for it), but I know lots of people loved it, so this my “it’s not you - it’s me” situation.

Yeah like folks love norco and I couldn’t get into that game on any level at all.

Oh yeah, same here with Norco and Disco Elysium, I will try to revisit them later but for all the hype, my initial reaction on playing them was one of extreme disinterest.
Also didn’t get into NORCO after playing ACT 1 that is available on Steam for free. Maybe I’ll give it another go at some point, since people enjoyed it so, but it didn’t seem like my thing at all.

Is reading your thing? It’s basically a novel.
AKA Charo
I’m an avid reader in real life, so when it comes to games, I tend to go for a completely different experience than I can get from reading a book - much more interactive. There are exceptions to that, of course, and I was fully prepared to love NORCO, especially since so very many did.
With that being said, I just found NORCO’s writing on the pretentious, self-indulgent side, and I remember a lot of handholding, even for a simple (gameplay-wise) game like that. So it’s not that it’s a lot of reading, it’s that it wasn’t really engaging reading, for me at least.
Might have not been in right mood for it, either. Regardless, it didn’t grab me.

Pretentious and self-indulgent are the words i would use too. I also hated the art style as a whole.yeah to me the devs seemed more interested in creating “high art,” than creating an interesting game experience.
Yup, that’s exactly my feelings about it. Pretentious and self-indulgent.
I’m an avid reader too but it just didn’t click with me and a big part of that is the writing style.
Not really sure what type of game this is but it definitely looks like it belongs here.
