Inspire Me
Normal service will be resumed shortly, but for now, here is a poem I wrote about the AG Get-Together back in August. Only just finished it, though it should be obvious why this took so long.
At the get-together three languages were spoken, English, German and Dutch. In this poem each verse has a line in English, a line in German, and a line in Dutch. Whilst undoubtedly not perfect, the poem should pretty much rhyme with the lines in those three languages.
Translation available on request.
Adventure Spielers Vergadering
From all of Europe, to Germany we go
Nur ein paar, aber wir haben Spaß umso
Neem avontuur grappen naar een nieuw niveau
The place that we are staying is quite remote
Spiele zu sprechen, oft mit einer Anekdote
Op zoek naar auto’s geel geschilderd, niet rood
For food we go a long way in the dark
Zum Abendessen sind wir nicht autark
Zoek een plaats in een industrieel park
Next day more come, one with an early start
Mehr als eine Person mit einem Bart
Met kleding zowel vele gekleurde en zwarte
Then to a town that’s sat upon a hill
Das Wetter ist warm und fast windstill
Kan niet in het musuem. We zijn hier pril
After a nice lunch, we find the castle is open
Schauen Sie sich die Landschaft mit Teleskopen
De daling grote, goed hebben we niet gezopen
Museum of dragons holds us in its thrall
Große Echsen aus großen Stand auf Modellfall
Verliezen tellen, is er zo’n groot aantal
Up Felsenmeer wishing that I was fitter
Johannes einige mehr Wasser bitte
Klimmen is moeilijk in deze hitte
Then food, this time some African cuisine
Das Restaurant ist viel mehr als eine Kabine
Voor na de maaltijd, poëzie routine
Look out for glowing zombies in the trees
Plus viele andere Abenteuer-Spiel Klischees
In het donker de dingen die we vrees
A fun weekend, we are ready to go again
Vielleicht sehen wir uns den berühmten Souterrain
Op de Zweedse vergadering fenomeen

Quest for Knowledge
I’m hoping to find name for game that I played long ago
The people here so well-informed, someone is sure to know
A time machine, grandfather clock, I give it to myself
Oh never mind, the box is sitting there upon my shelf
For real retro gaming nerds, name that game.
Awesome, Step!
And relatively few grammatical errors too!
Small suggestions for the Dutch parts: ‘avontuurgrappen’ is just one word, musuem should be museum (typo?), ‘daling grote’ should be ‘grote daling’ (adjectives are placed before the noun in Dutch), and ‘we vrees’ only works as ‘ik vrees’ (verb conjugation otherwise dictates ‘we vrezen’ which doesn’t rhyme), ‘vergaderingsfenomeen’ (with an s to bridge both words) or ‘vergaderfenomeen’ (the better word in context) is just one word too - oh, and its article should be ‘het’ instead of ‘de’.
Most of these are really hard for non-native Dutch speakers, though.
The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
Thanks for the pointers Tim. A couple of those are where I knew I’d forced things because I’d found a rhyme setup that I particularly liked (the well-known poet’s fudge. I do it in English poems as well from occasion) but it’s good to know why things don’t work the way they were written.

A couple of my outstanding subjects have been written up today, on the commute from a tax course in London. Will post when I have had time to type them up properly.

Time is so hard to find at the moment. Both now typed up and both performed live last night. First up, a Lady Kestrel idea.
Depths of Depression
Feel existential misery
No-one is happy to see me
It cannot help that I’m quite dark
My furnishings a little stark
Those rusty chains upon the wall
Do not scream “luxury” at all
And as for the straw on the floor
It’s not something that most adore
It makes things worse, I have no doubt
That those inside cannot get out
To make them happy, I would try
But most of them just sit and cry
And there’s no way I’ll get ahead
When those who stay here end up dead
So please forgive my sad expression
I’m just a dungeon with depression

Definitely a challenge this one. Thanks a bunch Uptimist.
Furball Attraction
Some like Charlize Theron, Some like Johnny Depp
They’re not for me, I much prefer the likes of Shep
Small screen and big our doggy friends are best by far
From Rin Tin Tin to Toto, of their films the star
When Petra from Blue Peter passed, I nearly cried
My love of canine actors, some people deride
Their views do not matter, man’s best friend does enthral
But even though they’re all good, one stands above all
So much adored I had to find their place of birth
That brave and faithful collie, the best one on earth
It took a while to find it, but one day I stood
At a place once a house in a poor neighbourhood
A trendy club it is now, the dancefloor’s up on top
I boogied there under the stars, I couldn’t stop
For at this spot I had found joy, which some would scorn
Dancing on the roof of the house where Lassie was born,

Can you please do one of my ideas too? *bats eyes at Steve in an indescribably pretty way*

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Actually one of yours is very much next on my list, though I suspect my interpretation of the subject will wildly differ from your original thought.

It sounds like an elephant joke, Lucien!
Step,
The dungeon and Lassie poems are excellent. I hope your audience appreciated them.
I don’t really rise and shine. I caffeinate and hope for the best.
Meanwhile, bonus interactive version of a poem that my Facebook followers will have seen already. Click the first line of each verse (all but first and last) to see the inspiration.
Sharks with ASBOs
Of finny fiends, it is the warder
The Anti Shark Behaviour Order
Applied to those aquatic thugs
Who treat us like a bunch of mugs
The first to get one was old Jaws
Who terrorised the sunny shores
And, when they chased him, loved to gloat
“You’re going to need a bigger boat”
And Mega-Shark dark fame attains
By leaping up and downing planes
He’s always kicking up a fuss
With his mate Giant Octopus
Their offspring, Sharktopus, runs free
A reprobate on land and sea
With Sharky teeth and Octo-limbs
All suffer at his wayward whims
Still others have left sea for land
Have started swimming through the sand
They cause those on the beach to frown
By knocking their sandcastles down
Whilst down below the Deep Blue Sea
Smart sharks taunt Jackson with some glee
They’ll do whatever that it takes
To scare him more than planes of snakes
There’s one as spirit floats around
Pops up wherever water’s found
He seem to think it quite a laugh
To rear up at you from the bath
Now gang culture’s begun to grow
The group that’s known as Sharknado
Can take out their foes unaware
By falling on them from the air
So if these fish should cause you trouble
Just call for us and at the double
We’ll help you stop the silly larks
Of those annoying ASBO sharks.

As promised, one of tsa’s ideas. I will get on to the others, it’s just a matter of thinking on the idea until something clicks.
I suspect this will be very different to expectations. I expect three main differences.
Firstly, I live in a seaside town. The beach is a short walk from my house. Consequently the summer season at the beach means something entirely different to me than it will to most people. Secondly, this poem doesn’t rhyme. They don’t have to. Honest!. Thirdly, you did say “Thoughts of the Beach”, right?
Grockle probably isn’t a well-known term oustside the South of England.
Can’t be bothered to read the poem? Try the audio version! (I’m not going to do that every time)
Thoughts of the Beach at the Start of the Summer Season
Cold winds howl
Harsh waves crash
Soaking me
Still this time
Full of calm
Full of peace
Soon will end
Warmer grow
Summer comes
And it brings
Grockle crowds
Braying hordes
Littering
Digging holes
Making mess
Kids run wild
Parents burn
No peace here
But in time
World will turn
Summer ends
How I long
For that day
Calm restored
Understand
This is what
I prefer
Cold winds howl
Harsh waves crash
Soaking me
