The effect of fan & social media over games development ...
and feedback in general.
I am sure Dreamfall Chapters wasn’t planned to work this way, and we all know about Broken Age 2nd Ep tedious puzzles were because the endless feedback for the lack (..or easiness) of puzzles at the 1st one, and not to forget other games (esp episodic ones) i recall the last and almost recent statement of The Odd Gentlemen to not include any more QTE at the next Chapters was also because the endless whining over it.
That said. what does this make of the effect of fans through games with long time development(s)? is it healthy or ..... ?
I asked 2 Devs to change their character designs, they changed it, listened to it.
Not all whiners are armchair specialists.
It’s up to Devs to listen to reasonable posts wading through all fan noise.
Wat happened to Dreamfall plan?
I heard Rtg has all the budget and unity5 power to make everyone happy.
P.S
For this thread i will only talk to Advie and wilco for obvious reasons.

A bit of both
In principle it is a good thing that the developers can get some feedback from their fans, and can improve their game based on that feedback.
In reality you get three different opinions for every two people that speak out. What some think is terrible and should be changed, is the exact same things that others love about a game, and the ones that the developers listen to is often the ones that cry the loudest, and not those that are actually right
Also when talking about episodic games, it can lead to some rather large inconsistencies where later episodes are very different from previous episodes, and the whole thing doesn’t come together as one single game.
Basically I think that developers should have the balls to try and make the game that they envisioned, and NOT try to make games by committee.
Having said that .. QTE MUST DIE!!!

Edit:
I’m pretty sure the main reason RTG changed Dreamfall Chapters from an adventure game to “a story driven game with adventure elements”, is because of the success of TTG and games like Life is Strange, and only to a smaller degree because of the feedback from fans and others.
I heard ...
I assume that by “I heard” you once again mean “I just made this up myself, and it is not based on any facts whatsoever”

Last time i said i heard he didnt have budget, you said same thing.
So wats the fact, did he or he didnt?
Or you are too caught up in whim of dissing me

I haven’t got the slightest idea what you are talking about .. or rather perhaps I do, but think that you have seriously misunderstood a lot of things.
And “making everyone happy” is not a question of budget or Unity 5 power!
That sentence simply doesn’t make any sense.

well said, and i agree in the general sense.
(but) what do these changes make out of the full product (whether Dreamfall or Kings Quest) a while from now when the excitement for episode releases is history, will these two hold up? ...even if they might yet to release 10s of updates patches to make them look like solid games with one style of game playing all along…
These effects and the developers-greeting-them will make those games forgettable, and on the long term, they won’t impress neither the Story Driven fans nor the Hardcores ... tsk tsk

100% agreed so just do it! If you haven’t got the ideas & creativity to start with to develop a game then you’re not going to get very far with the fan input idea of ‘paint by numbers’ so forget it as you’re not going to please anyone! It has to be yours i.e. the developer’s concept (which whatever is not going to please everyone any way so you might as well do your own thing!)
In principle it is a good thing that the developers can get some feedback from their fans, and can improve their game based on that feedback.
Yes agreed, but if you’re developing a game you should already have a large knowledge of games & be on the pulse of what works for players & what doesn’t unless you’re going out on a limb to try more experimental stuff where the feedback will come back later either positively or otherwise.
In my mind the feedback should be more about how the game works as a whole story-wise (if there is one) + puzzle-wise & more importantly if there are any dead-ends/bugs to be encountered but surely they should be resolved before release but apart from fixing issues shouldn’t dictate how the game progresses.
That said. what does this make of the effect of fans through games with long time development(s)? is it healthy or ..... ?
I don’t know! But my thought is it’s not healthy on the one hand as it cramps the creativity of the developer but on the other as long as the developer doesn’t veer from their concept perhaps it can be helpful in adjusting some in-game issues which personally as said think should be resolved before release. (N.B. Of course they are on an episodic release!)
